Researchers at the Vanderbilt Eye Institute are now a step closer to deciphering a leading cause of blindness in the United States – glaucoma.

In a recent study, David Calkins, Ph.D., director of Research at the VEI, discovered that the first sign of injury in glaucoma actually occurs in the brain.

According to a study released by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Lewis County ranks fifth in counties with the poorest health outcomes.

County Health Rankings, the first report to rank the overall health of the counties in all 50 states - more than 3,000 total - used a standard formula to measure how healthy people are and how long they live.

The Tennessee Department of Health has determined that health providers in the state received 11,210 doses of H1N1 flu vaccine now impacted by a voluntary, non-safety related recall. Sanofi Pasteur, Inc., is recalling four lots of H1N1 vaccine in 0.25 ml pre-filled syringes designed for use in children ages 6 to 35 months. These lots passed all tests for potency and purity when they were distributed, but routine follow-up tests after distribution found that levels of antigen, the active ingredient, were slightly lower than the level specified on the label.

The Lewis County Health Department, 51 Smith Avenue, Hohenwald, will offer an after-hours H1N1 Vaccine (shot) clinic on Tuesday, December 8, 2009, 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.

This is a walk-in clinic, no appointment is necessary.  The vaccine is free of charge and available to all age groups regardless of medical condition.

CoverTN program officials announced November 12, 2009 that new enrollment in the limited benefit health insurance program will suspend December 31, 2009, as a result of reaching budget capacity due to the most successful open enrollment in the program’s history.

The better-than-expected success of the open enrollment period marks yet another milestone for CoverTN as the program surpasses its enrollment target.

As recommended by the Centers for Disease Control, Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) has adjusted its visitor policy during flu season in an effort to help prevent the spread of the virus and protect patients.

The medical center is requesting that any individual with a respiratory illness and children ages 15 and younger refrain from visiting a patient or accompanying a patient who is seeking treatment.

COLUMBIA, Tenn. — The Diabetes Education Group at Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) will host a meeting titled “Oral Health” on Tuesday, September 1, in the medical center’s Private Dining Room One at 11:30 a.m. The group, which meets monthly at MRMC, encourages the public to attend this free event.

Brian Fann, DDS, a dentist with a local practice in Columbia, will be the guest speaker at the next meeting. Dr. Fann will discuss oral health and its direct relation to diabetes management.

Liver transplant

With urgency dictating a predawn start, a 12-member
team comprised of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and technicians
performed Vanderbilt University Medical Center's 1,000th liver
transplant on Sunday.

The patient for this historic five-hour procedure was Sharon Byrd, 54, a
retired postal worker from Clarksville, Tenn.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, August 27, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. in the fourth floor classroom of the medical center.

Maury Regional Healthcare Foundation announced today a new partnership between the Lewis Health Center and the Dispensary of Hope to provide prescription medications to individuals in Lewis County who do not have prescription insurance coverage.  The program can also benefit commercially insured patients who do not have prescription coverage but otherwise qualify, Medicare patients who fall in the part D gap and Medicaid patients who have reached the prescription limit.
