The Meriwether Lewis Chapter and the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation have partnered nationwide with the Boy Scouts of America to offer Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts and Explorers an opportunity to earn the Meriwether Lewis Commemorative Award patch.

“It’s been one year and one month since I brought this to your attention,” Lori McKinney told members of the Hohenwald Planning Commission.  “Can you tell me what has been done?”

“I wonder if it has been put on the back burner,” she continued.

“I can assure you it has not,” Mayor Don Jones replied.

When she and her husband purchased the lot in the Edgefield subdivision just over 10 years ago from Contractors Bill and Bret Hankins, the father/son team had no hydrology study performed on the new subdivision.

After being struck by a truck while checking the family’s mailbox a few weeks ago, Jenna Hensley, daughter of State Representative Joey Hensley, is home from a stay in Vanderbilt Hospital’s Stallworth Rehabilitation Center. She sustained a concussion, a brain and neck injury, a right broken leg, 4 broken ribs, a pulmonary contusion,  liver, kidney and spleen lacerations, and multiple abrasions. Jenna is expected to make a complete recovery.

At least one candidate admitted nervousness but that was quickly shed as the questions flew and answers flowed.

Candidates mastered the art of time management as 90 seconds zipped past seemingly, at the speed of light.  The green light was switched to yellow after just one minute urging those hopeful for votes to the office of Lewis County mayor in the August 5th election toward brevity and precise responses.

In a word association game, “coleman fuel” brought to mind camping for several but for a few, the immediate response was “dope.”

“You mean to tell me, all these people think of nice things like camping and you think of dope,” Tommy Farmer asked the woman.  With a nod she admitted she was a recovering meth addict.

A Hohenwald teenager drowned in Buffalo River June 6, 2010 while on a canoe trip with friends.

According to Kenneth Martin, lead investigator for the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department, Robert Mosley, 16, a brother and sister, Cody and Amy Frizzell, and Harvey Hensley had been canoeing down the river and stopped at a sand bar at the end of Harris Road in Wayne County to picnic and swim.

A local man was found dead in the Lewis County Jail after being arrested by Tennessee Highway Patrol Officer Steve Karpati earlier the same day.

Foreclosure processes across the state have banks taking second looks at properties in disrepair.  In one local case recently, Mayor Don Jones told the Hohenwald City Council, the bank gave the property back to the homeowner because they did not want the hassle of the upkeep.

According to the mayor, the property owner did not want the house and property either.

Unwilling to pay taxes and unwilling to comply with local property restrictions, the homeowner may leave City officials no choice but to condemn the property.

It sounded too good to be true.  An order for 70 filet mignon for Mandy and Danny Weigel at The Junkyard Dog could have meant a nice profit.  But as she listened closely to the order she quickly began to suspect a scam.

And she was right.

The eight year old daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Joey Hensley was hit  by an oncoming vehicle Tuesday in an accident in front of the family home in Hohenwald.  Dr. Hensley serves the 70th District as state representative.

A witness, Troy Walton, said he passed the home traveling east on Highway 20 in Hohenwald, and saw Jenna Hensley standing by the mailbox where she had collected mail for the family.

The girl crossed the road behind the Walton vehicle into the path of an oncoming car driven by John Tracy Odem of Lawrenceburg, Walton said.

An unveiling of a new Discover Tennessee trail, Nashville’s Trace, will take place Wednesday, June 2, 2010, 12 noon, at the Loveless Barn at Loveless Cafe in Nashville.

A reception will follow at the Strand Theatre at 3 p.m. and a second stop will be made at the Wayne County Welcome Center at Collinwood at 4:30 p.m.

Edd Sharp and Mike Robertson of Lawrenceburg Monument Company stand in front of the monument at the Lewis County Courthouse lawn which names Lewis Countians killed in service in the last century. Sammye Jo and William Lawson researched and found four names had been omitted from the list. Those names were Vietnam, Junior Ray Burns, World War 1, Baxter Johnston, John M. Wix, and Paul Peevyhouse. Mr. Robertson engraved the names on the monument at no cost.

A mobile disaster recovery unit returned to Hohenwald’s Emergency Management facility on Commerce Drive, Wednesday.

Individuals with damages to homes may call 1-800-621-3362, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. to register a claim.   Or register for assistance by visitingwww.disasterassistance.gov.  Those with speech or hearing disabilities, TTY 800-462-7585.

Federal Emergency Management Agency funds may be available to assist homeowners, EMA Director Daniel B. Atkinson said.  “Homeowners are still responsible for repair costs,” he said.

FEMA officials announced news of a mobile unit at which people affected by recent flooding may meet one on one with a FEMA disaster assistance specialist to report losses.

The Mobile Disaster Recovery Center (MDRC) will visit Lewis County May 17, 18 and 19 due to the county's designation for federal assistance in Middle Tennessee, to provide assistance to people affected by the severe storms and flooding that started on April 30.

The Fifth Annual 3-Man Scramble Golf Tournament for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is scheduled for Saturday, May 22, 2010 at the Hohenwald Municipal Golf Course. Entry fee will include green fee, cart and lunch. Tee time is 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. with shotgun start. All proceeds from sponsors go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Two offices in voting District 9 will be lacking candidates in the upcoming August 5, 2010 election forcing the hand of members of the Board of Commissioners to make appointments in September.

Unless, write-in candidates become certified before noon of the June 16, 2010 deadline.

One of the positions for the Lewis County School Board is currently held by Mike Hinson, who serves as chairman of the elected body.  During 2010 election members representing odd numbered districts will open to the voter’s choice.

Former band director for Lewis County Schools, Kenny Graves, announced this week consideration of forming a community band.  Musicians with clarinets, flutes, trumpets or other instruments in storage may want to tune up and contact Graves if interested in learning more.
