Abandoned puppies

Approximately 35 to 40 dogs will make their way to new homes by way of a humane society in the northern section of the United States Sunday as the High Forest Humane Society continues its efforts to find homes for abandoned and unwanted animals from Lewis County.

Applications are now being accepted for the Melanie Webb Scholarship.  The non-traditional scholarship targets adults twenty-one years and above who have a desire to further their education and plan on attending Columbia State Community College.  Full or part-time students may apply.

Applications may be found at the local Chamber of Commerce office, Board of Education, Public Library, Career Center, and the financial aid office of Columbia State Community College.

Kenny Durham and the Rocky Mountain High Band will return home to the Strand Theatre for a live performance on January 16, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.  Kenny, a loyal supporter of the Strand Theatre, gave a sell out benefit concert during the Strand’s first season.

The Lite-a-Light program held annually by the Pilot Club of Hohenwald will be kicked off Saturday, December 5, 2009 at 5:30 p.m. when a decorated tree under the Gazebo on South Maple Street will be lighted.

This year will be the 21st year for the Lite-a-Light program.

The program was the first fundraiser for the Pilot Club of Hohenwald which was organized in Lewis County in October, 1989 and chartered in November. The service organization has for its foremost objective been helping those with brain related injuries.

One in six people in Tennessee will go hungry during the holiday season, the Tennessee Wildlife Federation (TWF) announced today.   As gun season opens this weekend for deer, the organization, through its Hunters for the Hungry program, has partnered with hunger relief agencies and sportsmen to help reduce the number of families in need.

“By now you have a pretty good idea which trees are going to make it, and which ones have succumbed to the drought of ’07. You’re probably pretty sure, too, that there’s been enough rain this summer to soften the ground and restore the local water table, so it’s time to remove and replace the dead or dying trees around your home.”

On October 7, 2009, Meriwether Lewis, the leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, will be honored for the first time with a national memorial service. In commemoration of the bicentennial of Lewis’ death and to respect his memory, Hohenwald, Tenn. will pay tribute to Meriwether Lewis with a ceremony worthy of this true American hero.

A Permaculture Design Certification Series was held in Hohenwald recently. The 72-hour curriculum was held four weekends in June and July.  The Permaculture certification series was sponsored by the Center for Holistic Ecology and the Sonnenschein Green Initiative. This unique opportunity to receive training and certification in Permaculture Design has attracted people nationwide, instructors said.

Robbie Whitehead and his dad, Bobby Whitehead, caught these fish at the Buffalo River on July 3, 2009. The fish weighed 30 pounds combined and the largest weighed 10 pounds.

A Red Hat group known as the Walking Wonders met July 23, 2009 at the Davy Crockett Restaurant in Lawrenceburg. The group then went shopping.

Those members attending were, Margaret Davis, Melba Rasbury, Nellie London, Nadine Turnbow, Verlin George, Judy Von Dollen, Marjorie Graves, Melvis Staggs, Beryl Wynne and Patty Hedge. 

The next meeting will be in August in Spring Hill.

The staff of Bright Future Equestrian Center recently began welcoming visitors with physical and mental challenges.  Visitors, with the help of the staff, have begun to learn about the needs of animals living at the facility on Columbia Highway/Highway 412 E.

To date, adults such as those who work through programs at Buffalo River Services, have learned to groom, feed and interact with horses, cows and goats.

Director of Lewis County’s Buffalo River Services group Rose Lynn DePriest said her group “Is loving it. We are blessed to have a place like that.”

“Voyage of Discovery: the Life of Meriwether Lewis” was presented Saturday, July 11, 2009 as part of the 2009 “Be Creative at Your Library” state-wide summer reading program at the Lewis County Public Library.  Members of the Meriwether Lewis Chapter, LCTHF assisted with the program.

Crystal Smith discussed the early life of Meriwether Lewis.  The differences between life 200 years ago and today were compared and illustrated through several replica items that would have been used during Meriwether Lewis’ youth.

Plugging in commercials during ball games is how the gig started.  Not such a bad job for a high school kid who loves radio. 

 

Extraordinary amounts of rain flooded the station in May, damaging not only carpet, but the studio production room and the transmitter, forcing the small AM station off the air.  And it appeared it could force Jordon Hensley out of a job too.

Then the pieces starting falling into place.
