Conflicting stories surround shooting death

Thursday, January 7th, 2010

When law enforcement officials arrived at 1707 Seiber Ridge Road last Wednesday, one man was dead, another was injured and two stories were offered as explanation.

Derrick Staggs, 124 Piney Road,  was found lying on the floor by Deputy Todd Webb when he entered the home.  Deputies Todd Laster and Jeff Carroll also noted Kyle Williamson lying on the floor with a large cut above his eye.  No vital signs were found for Staggs and Coroner Richard Tate was called to the scene.

A girl friend of Staggs, Yulonda Sanders, said she and Staggs had been fighting for several days and he came to the Williamson home to see her.

One version by witnesses says Staggs and Williamson fought, tumbling down stairs, resulting in a 410 single shot shotgun discharging, killing Staggs.  Another version of the story says Staggs and Williamson, along with Samantha Williamson were upstairs when the gun discharged.

The body was sent to the State of Tennessee Medical Examiner’s office for autopsy.

Also at the residence was Kevin R. Williamson Sr. who, law enforcement says, refused to give a statement.

Staggs’ death remains under investigation.
