“Voyage of Discovery: the Life of Meriwether Lewis” was presented Saturday, July 11, 2009 as part of the 2009 “Be Creative at Your Library” state-wide summer reading program at the Lewis County Public Library.  Members of the Meriwether Lewis Chapter, LCTHF assisted with the program.

Crystal Smith discussed the early life of Meriwether Lewis.  The differences between life 200 years ago and today were compared and illustrated through several replica items that would have been used during Meriwether Lewis’ youth.

An appearance was made by Captain Meriwether Lewis (portrayed by Joe C. Smith), who talked about preparations for the Expedition, and recounted some of the unusual experiences and adventures along the Trail including encountering a grizzly bear.

Mrs. Grinder (portrayed by Patty Choate) recounted Meriwether Lewis’ visit to Grinder’s Stand along the Natchez Trace in October 1809.  She talked about the importance of Lewis’ Expedition journals which he was carrying with him on his journey to Washington, D.C. for publication.  The Lewis County Library has an eleven-volume set of these journals which includes a separate volume of the maps used and created by the Lewis and Clark Expedition.  Mrs. Choate also spoke of how Lewis County came to be named and created in honor of Meriwether Lewis in 1843.
