Investigating officer William Hobbs of the Tennessee Highway Patrol stated speed was definitely a factor, but drugs and possibly alcohol could also have been involved. He stated the case is still under investigation. Thompson was found with crystal methamphetamine on his person with a street value estimated at $1,100.

A neighbor who asked to remain anonymous stated the cycle had gone up and down Buffalo Road a couple of times at a very high rate of speed. “He was really flying” the man said.

Assisting in the investigation at the scene were Dustin Jones also of the THP and Todd Webb of the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department.
