Most of the law enforcement and emergency response personnel were busy Friday pulling stranded motorists from ditches and from snow drifts when a blast of arctic weather descended on Hohenwald.

Although schools announced closings Thursday evening in anticipation of a winter storm forecast, it was business as usual Friday morning in downtown Hohenwald.  About 9 a.m. a light snow began, quickly changing into a thick mass of white, covering the roadways in about 10 minutes.  With temperatures hovering near 30 degrees, it was not long before snow plows were necessary to help business workers as they made a quick exodus toward home.

Reports from the Hampshire area included several motorists slowed for hours as snow plows attempted to clear Highway 412.  Another report from local law enforcement on Highway 48 South said the road would have been impassable if it were not for the efforts of a citizen pulling motorist back onto the road near the county landfill entrance.

The run on grocery stores began early with shoppers standing in line to buy milk, bread and other necessities.  One store was reportedly out of bread by noon.

While many drivers slippery moves in the snow were unplanned, others took the rare opportunity to spin in the city's parking lot
