LCMS Baseball opens season with win over Wayne County
March 5, 2020
The Lewis County Middle School Panthers baseball team opened their regular season hosting the Wayne County Middle School Wildcats on Leap Day, Saturday, February 29, 2020.
Brycen McDonald took the bump for the Panthers as they opened their 2020 baseball season and went right to work against the Wildcat batters, having a clean first inning retiring the Wildcats in order and striking out two of the three batters he faced.
In the home half of the first, Steele Moseley started things off with a single and quickly made his way around the base paths to score on an Ethan Ray ground ball to short.
Later in the bottom of the first, McDonald would plate 2 on a double and Hayden Jackson bushed McDonald across on a groundout, and the Panthers would end the first with a 4-0 lead.
The Wildcats would cut into the Panther lead in the top of the second, as McDonald ran into a little trouble, giving up a couple of hits and surrendering 3 free passes, and the Wildcats made it a 1 run game, 4-3. It would be the only runs the Wildcats could muster on the afternoon.
The Panther batters picked up where they left off in the first scoring 4 unearned runs and taking an 8-3 lead into the third. McDonald returned to the mound in the third with a perfect inning, striking out three in order.
In the home half of the third, Rylan Sims had a one-out single and scored on Moseley's third hit of the day, a 2 out RBI single that gave the Panthers a 9-3 lead.
Moseley moved from shortstop to the mound in relief of McDonald in the fourth and had a 1-2-3 inning, striking out 2.
The Panthers could only manage a McDonald single in the bottom of the inning, but still held a 6-run lead moving into the fifth. Moseley struck out the first two he faced in the fifth, and pitched out of a jam to end the Wildcat fifth.
Walks to Eli Carroll and Sims to start the bottom of the fifth would open the door for the Panthers to finish the game early, with Moseley, Ray, and Bentley Kelsey pushing across the four runs needed to end the game.
McDonald went 3 innings for the Panthers, allowing 3 runs on 2 hits while striking out 7 and walking 2. Moseley pitched 2 innings of relief, allowing no runs and no hits as he struck out 4 and had 1 hit batter.
Moseley was also a perfect 4-4 at the plate, scoring 3 runs and driving in 2. Ethan Ray had 3 RBI in the game.
The Panthers were scheduled to travel to Perry County on Monday, March 2 for the start of a three-game week.
