County Commission district 4 seat opens at resignation of Taylor

Field narrows for TN House of Reps seat

April 16, 2020

Yet another seat for a local elected official opened last week when Lewis County Mayor Jonah Keltner received a resignation letter from County Commissioner Earl Taylor.

“To whom it may concern, It is with great regret that I render this letter of resignation. I have loved serving my community as a commissioner but I cannot do so in an effective manner, therefore I will no longer be representing the 4th district of Lewis County as a commissioner,” an email dated Thursday, April 9, 2020 read. It was signed, Robert E. Taylor.

In an email to members of the Board of Commissioners, Mayor Keltner included information from CTAS (County Technical Assistance Service) regarding the Procedure for Filling Vacancies. Because the resignation occurred within 120 days of a general election scheduled for Lewis County, the Board will not be required to appoint someone to the seat.

Lewis County Election Administrator Rusty Isbell confirmed Tuesday the opening will be placed on the August 6, 2020 ballot. Anyone residing in the 4th district interested in the position must qualify by noon, June 12, 2020. The position will up for re-election in 2022.

The Election Commission office is open Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., with no public access inside. Petitions, address changes and voter registrations are conducted in the parking lot with a phone call to 931-796-0510 to alert staff of the nature of business.

The Lewis County Board of Commissioners have the right to appoint someone to the open seat until the election in August, if they wish.

In a race for the 71st Tennessee House of Representatives seat, Christi M. Rice of Waynesboro will not be on the ballot after a failure to file paperwork in the Lawrence County Election Office, Isbell reported.

Vying for the seat are Republicans Austin Carroll of Hohenwald, Garry Welch of Savannah and incumbent David “Coach” Byrd of Waynesboro.

District 71 consists of Hardin, Lewis, Wayne and part of Lawrence Counties.
