The help yourself shelf at Paw Paw's Porch
April 16, 2020
Hohenwald helping Hohenwald is a current theme in our small town, especially when times get tough.
Paw Paw's Porch has stepped in since the end of March to provide nonperishable food items for those who may not have enough to go around.
Tommy and Andolyn Wherry, owners of Paw Paw's Porch, were talking about their 7 year old being happy that COVID-19 had gotten him out of school.
They thought about the children who were maybe not as happy soon after.
That is when they got the idea for the "help yourself shelf," where food could be available for anyone who needed it.
"What the schools are doing by giving out breakfast and lunch is great, but there's still one more meal left in the day," said Wherry.
Both Tommy and Andolyn hope that "help yourself shelves" can become a community-wide effort and start popping up all over town.
"I can remember as a child, going to bed hungry at times. Not that there wasn't food, just maybe not enough to go around," said Wherry in a Facebook post, "Together, we can make sure that there is plenty to go around."
If you do not have the means to start a food shelf yourself, both the porch and shelf at Paw Paw's Porch are open to donations.
