Local and area Co-Ed softball teams met at Lewis County Memorial Park on Saturday, July 11, 2020 competing for a cause in the 1st Annual Becky Carroll Spongeball Tournament.

The event was put together after the untimely passing of local civic icon Becky Carroll who, at the time of her death, was the Director of the Lewis County Senior Center.

In recent months, Carroll had been working hard to secure funding to replace HVAC units at the Senior Center and was unable to see the project completed. Organizers of the tournament began working to put together an event that would help fulfill Ms. Carroll's work and see completion of the Senior Center HVAC project.

A total of eight teams began play on Saturday morning in the double-elimination tournament, including six Hohenwald based teams, one Centerville based team, and one Columbia based team.

When the dust settled Saturday evening it was the Bad News Bears of Hohenwald, coached by Aaron Brewer, that took first place in the tournament. Backdoor Sliders of Centerville, coached by Zack Harvill, came in second, and Balls and Dolls of Hohenwald, coached by Taylor McVay, came in third.

Event organizer Taylor McVay commented that the entry fees from the tournament raised $1,300 to go toward the Senior Center project. There were other contributions made to the fund-raiser, including through benefit tee-shirt sales and individual contributions during the tournament. As of Tuesday morning, orders and contributions were still being made so an exact amount raised was unattainable.
