August 04, 1960

Second Lieutenant Henry Harris, Lewis County Composite Squadron Civil Air Patrol, attended a two-day meeting at Seward Air Force Base near Nashville. While the meeting was in progress, a surprise visit was made to the group by Brigadier General Stephen McElroy, National Commander of the Civil Air Patrol.

A high temperature reading of 100 degrees was recorded at Meriwether Lewis Park on July 26 and July 31 for the high of the month. The temperature also soared to 101 degrees on August 01. The low reading was 55 degrees on July 15. A total of 2.60 inches of rain fell during the month of July.

The following births were announced: Marion Darlene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hollis Hunt; and Angela Darlene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Davis.

Mrs. Johnie Murphey was honored for her 67th birthday with a surprise dinner attended by family and friends.


Advertised specials at Seaton’s Super Market included 25 pounds of Blue Seal self-rising meal for $0.99, a pound of Colonial coffee for $0.69, fresh ground beef for $0.39 a pound, a package of 12 hamburger buns for $0.29, a quart of Rainbo hamburger sliced dill pickles for $0.35, a half gallon of Country Club ice cream for $0.69, and a Johnson’s Holiday car wash cream for $1.49.

“The Angry Red Planet,” “Kettles and Old MacDonald’s Farm,” and “The Lone Texan” were the Friday and Saturday triple feature movies at the Highlands Drive-In and the Saturday feature at the Strand Theatre.

August 06, 1970

Emmett Reed was named manager for the new Lewis County Ambulance Service. This service was begun after W. E. McDonald of McDonald Funeral Home ceased operation of ambulance service July 1. Volunteer drivers provided service until Reed could begin operation on July 26. Judge A. B. Nicholson reported that all modern equipment would be used including a Cadillac ambulance with oxygen and a Chevrolet ambulance as back-up. Reed had served as an ambulance operator in the U. S. Army.


David Barber won the 12th annual Invitational Tournament at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club. Barber shot a five under par 67.

The following Lewis County teachers visited Cape Kennedy, FL with a group of 100 teachers in a course sponsored by Trevecca College: Lula Mae Burns, Martha Edwards, and Paul Spears. All three would appear in a 30-minute film, “Teachers in Orbit,” which would be shown on Channel 2 on August 6.


Dennis Carter won a stereo in a coloring contest held by Horner Furniture Company.

Winners in the Yard of the Week contest were Horace Brown, Edward Holt, Damon Pugh, Eva Rosson, and Bill Turnbow.

Funeral services were held for James Petway.

“A Walk in the Spring Rain,” starring Anthony Quinn, and “Targets,” starring Boris Karloff and Tim O’Kelley, were the Friday and Saturday double feature movies at the Highlands Drive-In.

August 07, 1980

A Lewis County resident was charged with the shooting of his brother which occurred following an argument between the two.

The field operations for the 1980 Census were nearing completion. A re-canvassing of the county was necessary due to computer errors in the address registrars.

Franklin County Judge Roy Tipps was elected chair of the South Central Tennessee Development District Board of Directors.

The 1978 market value of agricultural products sold by the 225 farms in Lewis County amounted to $1.7 million or an average of $7,618 each, up from the $1.2 million in 1974, according to a preliminary report of the 1978 Census of Agriculture.

Hohenwald’s first annual inside-outside sale was in progress. Music would again be provided on Saturday afternoon on Main Street by the group Country Shadow.

Mr. and Mrs. Tim Lyell announced the birth of their daughter, Stephanie Dawn.

Vera Burns was honored for her 80th birthday with a surprise dinner at the home of her daughter, Johnnie Durham.

Funeral services were held for James Jones.

“Bronco Billy,” starring Clint Eastwood, was the weekend movie at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

August 09, 1990

A large turnout was reported for the Lewis County General and Primary Election held August 2. Terry Bunch was elected to the office of County Executive, defeating incumbent Paul Spears. In the Sheriff’s race, Larry Hensley won over nine other candidates. Cherry L. Beckett was elected to the office of Circuit Court Clerk.

Tennessee’s preliminary unemployment rate for June was 5.4 percent, the lowest June rate since 1974. In Lewis County, the rate was 7.8 percent, down from 8.2 percent in May.

The Lewis County Chapter of the American Cancer Society was $1,500 short of their goal of $5,380 for the year following several activities staged in Hohenwald.

Advertised specials this week at M & M Shop Rite included boneless beef chuck roast for the price of $1.49 a pound, a half-gallon of Purity frozen yogurt for $2.39, a pound of Williams whole hog sausage for $1.69, a head of lettuce for $0.59, and yellow onions for $0.29 a pound.

August 10, 2000

An average turnout was reported in the State Primary and General Election held August 3 with 41 percent of voters going to the polls.

The Lewis County Museum was hosting an exhibition of Lewis County barn photographs taken by Sammye Lawson. Lawson would print her digital photographs on canvas paper which resulted in a richer depth of color.

Dana Corporation sponsored the annual dinner for educators in the Lewis County School System on August 7 at LCHS.

Century 21 Chalet Realty LLC was featured in the Chamber Spotlight column.

Bobby Fuller caught three catfish weighing 30 pounds while fishing in a private catfish pond.

The following births were announced: Camille Rochelle and Oliva Danielle, twin daughters of Jeff and Crystal Marrs; and James William, son of Jimmy and Kimberly Reeves.

Wilburn and Martha Haywood celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reception hosted by their children at their home in Gordonsburg.

Funeral services were held for Sherry Callura, 39; Molly Choate, 95, Raymond Grimes, 84; and for Richard Tuverson, 59.
