September 22, 1960

Genesco employees who had been on strike at the Hohenwald plant since September 12 met with factory officials. Following several small meetings with strikers, Plant Superintendent Ed Holman said that the plant would be resuming operations on September 30; adding that he felt that “close to 100 percent of the employees would report for work.” The strike leader was discharged for his part in organizing the strike.

Army Private First Class Billy Patton arrived for duty in Korea and was serving with the 4th U. S. Army Missile Command.

Airman First Class William Skelton was reassigned from James Connally Air Force Base to an overseas station in Japan.

Lewis County 4-H won first place in the Tennessee Forestry and Crops contest at the Tennessee State Fair. Their score set a new record for the highest score earned in this competition. The following four members of the team scored a total of 233 points out of a possible 240: Billy Brooks, Billy Johnson, Gary Moore, and Wayne Tatum.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Waynesboro with a score of 32 to 0. Don Hinson scored the first touchdown for the Panthers in the first quarter of the game from 10 yards out on a reverse.

Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Burlison announced the birth of their daughter, Belinda June.

Herbert Gordon was honored for his birthday with a dinner held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Dyer.

“Thunder in Carolina,” starring Rory Calhoun, and “Hell Bent for Leather,” starring Audie Murphy, were the Saturday night double feature at both the Highlands Drive-In and the Strand Theatre.

October 01, 1970

The annual Punt Pass Kick contest was scheduled for October 3 at the LCHS football field. This event was locally sponsored by Lynn Beard Ford.

The LCHS football game with Centerville scheduled for Friday, October 9 was rescheduled for Thursday, October 8 as school would be dismissed on October 9 due to a teachers meeting.

Four Lewis County Senior 4-H girls placed second in the District 4-H Girls Home Economic Judging Team Activity at the Tennessee State Fair. The team was comprised of Ellen Clifton, Nancy Hamilton, Wanda Johnson, and Anita Walker.

Marine Staff Sergeant Thomas Hertz, Jr. reported for duty at the Fourth Marine Corps District in Philadelphia.

Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Page celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reception attended by family and friends.

Funeral services were held for Alfred Ayers, 58; Thomas Beard, 78; Lois Carroll, infant; Mary Cotham, 95; Everette Dyer, 64; Alice Downey, 85; and for W.W. Pollock, 84.

Hassell Kelly Motor Company advertised free coffee and donuts to anyone who attended the showing of the 1972 Chrysler Plymouth Duster on October 7.

“Adam and Eve,” starring Christiane Martel and Carlos Baena, and “Spree,” starring Vic Damone and Jayne Mansfield, were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Highlands Drive-In.

October 02, 1980

Tillett Brothers Paving announced that the asphalt plant located on Highway 99 in Hohenwald would begin production on October 1. Area Superintendent Bill Dyer said that although the plant was designed primarily for state and municipal highway work, they would spend some time paving driveways and parking lots for the people of Lewis and Perry Counties.

MLEC announced they would hold an Open House at the Hohenwald office on October 9.

Danny Holt was named to the Mid-South Youth Camp Board.

Army Private Anthony Hinson completed advanced training at the U. S. Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, GA.

Army Private Robert Rawdon, Jr. was awarded the General Creighton W. Abrams Award at the end of basic training at Fort Knox, KY. The award was made to the trainee who best demonstrated leadership ability and professional military performance.

A Junior Bowling League was organized in Hohenwald with Steve Staggs being elected President. The group would begin league bowling on October 4.

Clark Carroll and Eric Hardison were named LCHS Players of the Week.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Waynesboro with a score of 21 to 0. Ronald Webster carried the ball 151 yards in 22 carries, and Benny Pace caught three passes for 32 yards and recovered two fumbles.

Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Matthews announced the birth of their son, Kyle Wayne.

Funeral services were held for Clyde Baker, Sr., 51; Helen Brewer, 49; Johnny Odom, 61; Homer Jones, 69; and for William Whitworth, 21.

“Airplane,” starring Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty, was the weekend feature at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

October 04, 1990

The Perkins Corporation of McKenzie, TN, developer of E.W. James Supermarket and the first Wal-Mart location in town, announced plans for a multi-million-dollar, 100,000 square foot shopping center addition tied on to the E. W. James Supermarket building.

Paula Ellis, Extension Leader for Lewis County and home economist, was presented the National Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Extension Home Economists.

Approximately 40 people attended a public meeting held at Hohenwald City Hall for the purpose of finding community interest and need for extending city water to county residents.

The Rod Brasfield Community Playhouse announced it would present the musical extravaganza “A Touch of Broadway” on October 6.

Sergeant First Class Ernest Hensley, Jr. was stationed in Saudi Arabia with the 130th RAOC unit of the Tennessee National Guard.

A prospective chapter of the Sweet Adelines, a ladies’ barbershop singer group, met to discuss seeking official status as a chapter.

Tabitha Tripp was crowned Queen in the 0-23-month old age division in the Town and Country Beauty Pageant held in Columbia.

The Lewis County Jaycees announced that due to the lack of entries, the Oktoberfest car show was postponed until a later date.

Greg and Mitzi Devore announced the birth of their son, Tucker Lee.

Funeral services were held for Mary Baker, 77; Carl Crowe, 23; and for Lucille Lutts, 77.

October 05, 2000

The Hohenwald City Council passed on the third and final reading, Ordinance 543, which prohibited the sale of fireworks in city limits. The council also authorized the drilling of a two-inch test well at the three city well sites to monitor water supply at all times.

Tennessee Highway Patrol Sergeant Bill Ray was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant.

Robert Treadwell was honored for 35 years of continuous service with Dana Corporation.

The following births were announced: Maxine Sofia Poe, daughter of Anthony and Dr. Milena Borden; and Alexa “Cheyenne,” daughter of Jerry and Annette Morris.

Funeral services were held for Mary Anderson, 96; Lanny Nixon, 50; and for Melba Pellerin, 86.
