"Daddy Gene" Durham

Funeral services for Alvin Eugene "Daddy Gene" Durham were conducted at McDonald Funeral Home in Hohenwald on Friday, September 25, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. with burial in Swiss Cemetery. He was born on May 30, 1933 and peacefully passed away at his home on September 22, 2020.

Officiating at the funeral were Kenny Durham, Don Hull and Daddy Gene's grandchildren. Pall bearers were John Hull, Joshua Hull, David Baker, Cranford Durham, Dwain Johnson and Dean Copeland.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Colonel Alvin Durham and Eura Waymon Nutt Durham; his wife of 65 years, Johnie V. Burns Durham; three brothers, Clovis Haggard Durham, William Daniel Durham, and Thomas Aaron Durham; and a granddaughter, Jessica Paige Ingrum.

He is survived by two brothers, Golden Ray (Cindy) Durham of Toledo, Ohio and Cranford Steven (Glenda) Durham of Hohenwald. Other survivors include one son, Kenneth Wayne (Debby) Durham of Hohenwald, and daughters, Beverly Durham (Don) Hull of Decatur, Alabama, Mary Frances Marshall and Joe Ruth Shelby, both of Hohenwald. Surviving grandchildren are John Cordell (Stacy) Hull, Joshua Eugene Hull, Betsy Hull (Blake) Hesselrode, Jennifer Durham (David) Baker and Seidina Day Ingrum. Surviving great grandchildren are Joseph Cordell Hull, Collin Blake Hesselrode, Cameron Bryce Hesselrode, William Gavin Baker, Samuel Garrett Baker, Skylar Eugene Adams and Sawyer Ray Staggs. Surviving step-great grandchildren are Kaden Ray Marshall, Karlie Alexis Marshall and Kasey Khane Marshall.


Mr. Durham was a faithful member of Springer Church of Christ. His favorite hobbies were playing shuffleboard and pool with his friends at the Lewis County Senior Citizens Center where he was a member of the board of directors. He worked at Genesco for over forty years, until its closing. He then worked for the Lewis County Government until his retirement.

Daddy Gene loved his family and his special friend Phyllis Cogdill. He made a difference in the lives of many people, and he will be missed by family and friends.

The family suggested that memorial donations be made to the Lewis County Senior Citizens Center, 347 East Main Street, Hohenwald, Tennessee 38462.
