Panthers Roll and Keep The Jug

The Lewis County High School Panthers football team hosted the Hickman County Bulldogs in the annual "Battle for the Brown Jug" on Friday night, September 25, 2020 at Bobby W. Sharp Stadium. The Panthers, 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in Region 5AA, had won five-straight "Brown Jug" battles over the Bulldogs.
In the first quarter, the teams exchanged possessions before the Panthers were able to put together a scoring drive late in the period. The Panthers moved into the red-zone with about two minutes remaining, and Blake Carroll sprinted into the endzone from the 12 and added the PAT to give Lewis County a 7-0.
The Panthers regained possession in the first, with little time on the clock, and add more points as Clydarius Sparkman broke free for a 21 yard touchdown run. With a failed conversion kick from Carroll, the Panthers lead grew to 13-0.
The Panthers capitalized on a Bulldog miscue and, with time expiring in the opening quarter, quarterback Bryson James connected with Robert Young on a 12-yard touchdown pass and Carroll connected on the point after and the Panthers stormed out to a 20-0 lead moving to the second quarter.
Hickman County was finally able to find the endzone midway through the second quarter when quarterback Rock Dansby connected with Aiden Wallace for a 14-yard touchdown pass and the successful point, bring the score to 20-7, but the Panthers would answer quickly. On the ensuing possession, Blake Carroll found the endzone for the second time in the game, this time on a 3-yard run, and he added the PAT to make the score 27-7 going into the half.
The Panthers struck quickly in the third quarter, when Ethan McCann broke free for a 12-yard touchdown run just under two minutes into the half. Blake Carroll's point after was successful, and the Panther lead climbed to 34-7.
On the next Bulldog possession, Sloan Moseley broke into the Bulldog backfield and ripped the ball from the Bulldog ball carrier and sprinted 18 yards into the endzone for a defensive score. Carroll again added the kick, and the Panthers took a 41-7 lead. The Panthers added one more score to the tally in the fourth quarter when Ayden Dunn broke loose for a 25-yard touchdown run. Ethan McCann's PAT failed and the Panthers took a 47-7 lead, a lead that would stand until time expired.
On a night when the Panthers churned out 361 yards on the ground, Clydarius Sparkman led the way with 106 yards on 9 carries and a touchdown. Lincoln Brewer had 5 carries for 82 yards, Blake Carroll 5 for 53 and 2 touchdowns, Ethan Fransen 1 for 26, Ayden Dunn 1 for 25 and a touchdown, Ethan McCann 2 for 15 and a touchdown, Andrew Ambaoa 1 for 14, Brady Johns 2 for 11, Ikaika Bosque 2 for 10, Chaz Sparkman 1 for 8, Jayce Clayton 1 for 5, Sloan Moseley 1 for 4, and Austin Hicks 1 for 2. Bryson James was 2-2 passing on the night for 39 yards and a touchdown. Blake Carroll caught 1 pass for 27 yards and Robert Young caught 1 pass for a 12-yard touchdown.
Facing a fast-paced Bulldog offense, the Panther defense held them to only 168 yards of offense. Kael Feichtinger had 14 tackles and one for a loss, Ethan Fransen 9 tackles, Ethan McCann 8 tackles, Sloan Moseley 7 tackles and a strip-and-score touchdown, Lincoln Brewer 6 tackles, Blake Carroll and Robert Young each had 5 tackles and a fumble recovery and Young a fumble recovery, Jaydon Stewart 4 tackles and one for loss, Hunter Smith 4 tackles, Clydarius Sparkman 3 tackles with 2 for a loss, Ian Carroll 3 tackles and 1 for a loss, Alex Fall 3 tackles, Austin Hicks 2 tackles and a sack, Riley Runions and Tylan Woodie 2 tackles, and Andrew Ambaoa, Maddox Kellogg and Eli Hankins 1 tackle each.
The Panthers improved to 6-0 and will travel for a Region 5AA tilt with Eagleville on Friday, October 2.
