Cardboard Recycling Program a Huge Success

November 5, 2020

The Lewis County Solid Waste Department announced that there are now 53 businesses and organizations in Lewis County participating in its Cardboard Recycling Program! Over 55 recycling bins were purchased over the summer with TDOT Litter Grant Funds by Lewis County Chief Operating Officer Johnny Clayton, meaning no local tax dollars have been spent for those bins.

After assembly, the bins were placed throughout the community for businesses to store their used cardboard until it is picked up by landfill attendants, usually twice a week.

The county also has large cardboard recycling trailers at several different locations for extremely heavy producers of cardboard. Lewis County Mayor Jonah Keltner stated, "I'm very proud of what our Solid Waste Director Bradley Loveless and his landfill attendants have been able to accomplish regarding our Cardboard Recycling Program. The county recently sold over 21 tons of recycled cardboard, which generated over $1,500 in revenue. The county also saved over $1,500 in hauling and disposal fees, so just that one trailer load of cardboard bales had a positive impact of over $3,000 in our Solid Waste Budget."

Director Loveless encourages the public to let the businesses and organizations who recycle their cardboard know they are appreciated, because it not only helps save the environment, it also helps saves local tax dollars and fees.
