Lady Panthers, Panthers Open Season On Road

The Lewis County High School Lady Panthers and Panthers basketball teams opened their 2020-21 basketball season on the road on Thursday, November 19, traveling to Decatur Co.-Riverside to face the Lady Panthers and Panthers.

The Lady Panthers, under first-year Head Coach Jonathan Owen, fell behind early as the host outscored the visitors 16-6 in the first eight minutes of action.

A 15-10 second quarter led by Kerrigan Reeves' 5 in the period, got the Lady Panthers right back in the game going in for the halftime break at 26-21.

The teams played an even third period, each scoring 14, as Keira Halbrooks dropped 6 in the quarter and the Lady Panthers trailed by 5, making the score 40-35.

Lewis County began to run out of steam in the final quarter and fell 58-41.

Kerrigan Reeves led the Lady Panthers with 12, Keira Halbrooks had 11, Serenity Warman 10, Layla Simmons 6, and Dalina Brown 2.

Grayse Linton led Decatur Co.-Riverside with 14, Kyndel McKenzie 13, Destiny Dabbs 7, Ally Funderburke and Corinne Juarez 6, Jayla Davenport and Macy Bromley 4, and Jasie Boroughs and K.B. Frost 2.

The Lady Panthers begin the season 0-1.

The Panthers took the floor for the second game of the night and the pace was rapid from the tip. Bryson Clayburn had 8 in the opening quarter, 2 three-point baskets, and the Panthers trailed by 4 at 22-18.

Riverside kept the pace up-tempo in the second, putting up 16 in the period and opening up a 38-29 lead going in to the half.

The Panthers came out of the locker room and proceeded to make the Decatur County offense uncomfortable, limiting the home team to only 5 in the third while dropping 22, with Rhett Middleton contributing 7, and the Panthers claimed a 51-43 lead moving into the final eight minutes of regulation.

The fourth quarter was a battle, as Decatur County chipped away at the Lewis County Panthers lead, but came up short in a 69-64 final.

Lewis County was led by Slade Moseley with 17, Bryson Clayburn 16, Rhett Middleton 13, Austin Shepherd 10, Levi Thompson 9, and Braden Powers 4.

Decatur County was led by Jayse Linton with 23, Noah Lunsford 14, Roman Adams 11, Reed Keeton and Cole Lackey 7 each, and Aaron Bartholomew 2.

The Panthers open the season 1-0.

The Lady Panthers and Panthers traveled to Perry County on November 24th to take on the Lady Vikings and Vikings.
