December 23, 2020



December 22, 1960

A still and ten gallons of whiskey were destroyed by Highway Patrolman Paul Hedge, Sheriff Alton McLemore, and Deputy Sheriff Henry Garrison. The still was located on Napier Road about 1.5 miles south of Rudolph’s Store. A man was arrested at the scene.

Robin Williams won first prize in the Home Lighting Contest. The homes were judged by out-of-town judges.

Horace Lawson was re-appointed to serve three years as a member of the Lewis County Board of Soil Conservation Supervisors.

The annual Big Brothers Paper Sale, conducted by the Fred E. Lomax American Legion Post 127, collected $1,675. Chair R. K. Roney, Jr. reported that the Legion was preparing 72 large sacks of groceries to be distributed to needy families. The balance of money collected would be used throughout the year for emergency relief to families and needy children.

The Lewis County Jaycees announced they would canvas the city Thursday and Friday night to collect toys for their annual toy drive for underprivileged children in Lewis County.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Hampshire with a score of 100 to 53. Melvin Brackeen was the high scorer for the team with 32 points.

Funeral services were held for Claude Skelton, 55.

“David and Bathsheba” and “Boy and the Pirates” were the Saturday night double feature at both the Highlands Drive-In and the Strand Theatre.

December 24, 1970

The American Legion Post 127 collected $1,920 in their annual Big Brothers Paper Sale.

Lawrence Tuttle graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland AFB, TX.

David Hinson returned home after serving in Vietnam with the First Infantry Division. While in Vietnam, he was awarded the Vietnamese Service medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Arcome with first, second, and third Oak Leaf Cluster.

Mr. and Mrs. Thomason purchased the Snip Snap Bite Café from E. Guy Hoover.

Funeral services were held for Jasper Breece, 52.

“The Crimson Cult,” starring Boris Karloff, and “The Mercenary,” starring Tony Musante and Franco Nero, were the Friday and Saturday double feature movies at the Highlands Drive-In.

December 25, 1980

1980 census figures released by the Tennessee State Planning Office showed that Lewis County had a population increase of 29.5 percent and residents within Hohenwald increased by 16.3 percent. This was an increase of 2,000 people countywide and an increase of 552 people citywide.

A former special investigator for Lewis County and the City of Hohenwald was arrested and charged with possession of alcoholic beverage for the purpose of resale.

Nelle Greengrass was named chair for the 1981 American Heart Association fundraising drive in Lewis County.

Adonis Creel graduated from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Rosaline Stevenson completed an Army primary leadership course at Bad Toelz, West Germany.

Glenys Park received a parachutist badge upon completion of a three-week airborne course at the U. S. Army Infantry School at Fort Benning, GA.

Sherry Breece was the top bowler in the Tuesday Night Ladies League when it met on December 9. She had 209 for the high game and 534 for the high series. Andye Demonbreun took the high game and high series honor with scores of 199 and 570 at Thursday Night Ladies Bowling League play.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Columbia with a score of 69 to 39. Allen Stewart was the top scorer for the team with 17 points. The Pantherettes defeated Columbia with a score of 65 to 30. Sandra Fite led the team in scoring with 16 points.

James Haley was elected to Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society at UT-Knoxville.

Mr. and Mrs. John Townsley celebrated their 25th anniversary.

Funeral services were held for Clady Edwards, 72; and for Fannie Overbey, 77.

“Young Cycle Girls” and “Cover Girl Models” were the weekend movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

December 27, 1990

The Lewis County Ministerial Association announced it would sponsor a countywide Christian New Year’s Eve celebration on December 31 at the National Guard Armory.

The Seventh District Tennessee American Legion meeting was held in Hohenwald at the Golden Saddle Restaurant on December 18. This was the first time in over two decades that the District Legion meeting was held in Lewis County.

Leslie Turner participated in the Vanderbilt University Marching Band during the 1990 fall semester.

David Allen was the winner of the First Citizens Bank Largest Stocking giveaway.

Funeral services were held for Daniel Gillis, 71; and for Euleta Lindsay, 58.

In area news: the State Department of Conservation set aside a parcel of land located adjacent to the Natchez Trace Parkway in Williamson County for the reburial of Native American Indian remains that were unearthed and removed as a result of construction projects.

December 28, 2000

Country music star Billy Ray Cyrus performed to a sold-out crowd of approximately 1,500 at the LCHS gymnasium on December 23. This concert was held as a benefit to the family of Officer Alan Ragsdale who was slain in the line of duty on November 27, 2000. Opening for the concert for Cyrus was the Holley Family of Hohenwald. Another highlight of the concert was when Cyrus introduced his daughter who had a special song to sing for the Ragsdale Family. Approximately $14,000 was raised.

E. W. James & Sons was featured in the Chamber Spotlight column.

The following Sheriff Deputies completed training at the Tennessee Law Enforcement Academy in Donelson: Brent Bridges, Larry Rodgers, and Richie Weatherly.

Students in eighth grade at LCMS presented the play “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens on December 15. Five different students portraying Scrooge were Justin Coker, Andrea Garrison, Michael Kinnard, Ross Livingston, and Alaina Runions.

Funeral services were held for Nicholas Hilburn, infant; and for Abbie Seiber.
