Movies on the Mind

Been a while, hasn’t it? Of course, it’s been a while since there’s been any big movies in the news, thanks to theaters being shut down for most of last year. Can you believe that there hasn’t been a single new Marvel superhero movie in theaters since Spider-Man: Far From Home in July 2019? Well thankfully, the last few months have seen the release of three fantastic TV shows that are perfect to scratch that superhero itch for any fan, and they’re available for streaming right now!

Wandavision

Rated: TV- 14

Streaming on: Disney Plus

This show’s a bit of a weird one, I’ll admit! The series stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as Marvel superheroes Scarlet Witch and the Vision, last seen together in Avengers: Infinity War. But when we first see them in this show, they’re living out the idyllic lives of a 1950s black-and-white sitcom couple. What exactly’s going on here, and why aren’t these Avengers doing any Avenging?

That mystery is what drives the series through its nine-episode run. Far from a traditional superhero story, it’s a strange blend of retro sitcom, sci-fi mystery, and psychological thriller. It’s hard to go into detail without spoiling the surprise, but if you’re a fan of sitcom history, incredible acting, or just really weird TV shows, give Wandavision a try!

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

Rated: TV-14

Streaming on: Disney Plus

Or, if you’re a fan of more traditional superhero adventures, give this dynamic duo a try! Picking up where the Captain America movies left off, this series follows the Captain’s closest allies, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) — aka the two titular heroes — as they try to carry on the legacy of the retired Steve Rogers by stopping a new supervillain threat.

However, things aren’t as simple as they seem. Sam and Bucky run into plenty of allies and enemies on their new mission, and it quickly becomes hard to tell who they can trust. Friends become foes, foes become friends, and our heroes are forced to confront aspects of Captain America’s legacy that they never knew existed. It’s an action-packed adventures filled with twists, turns, and plenty of heart If you love spy thrillers, buddy cop shows, or Captain America, this is the show for you!

Invincible

Rated: TV-MA

Streaming on: Amazon Prime

Of course, there are more superheroes out there than the ones you’ll find in the Marvel Universe! The unexpected breakout hit of this Spring, Invincible is an animated series adapted from a comic by Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead. It’s the story of Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun), an average nerdy high schooler with a big secret — he’s the son of Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), the world’s strongest superhero! Once Mark finds out he has his own superpowers, he takes on the costumed identity of Invincible and fights to prove himself as a great hero in his own right.

At first glance, Invincible seems like a simple coming of age superhero adventure. But under the surface, things are much darker than they look — and very, very violent, for that matter! Seriously, it may be a cartoon, but this show is NOT for kids! If you can’t handle some incredibly intense action, this show probably isn’t for you. But at its core, Invincible is still a fun, heartfelt story about fighting for what’s right and the importance of family. Plus, it’s got an incredible cast filled with A-list actors. It may not be for the faint of heart, but Invincible is still well worth checking out! Give it a try if you like Spider-Man, Superman, or The Walking Dead.
