May 31, 1951

R. K. Roney and Ben Williamson purchased the canning factory formerly owned by the J. C. LaRue Company, Inc. from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. They would continue to operate under the trade name of Old Black Joe Company.

An article about Newburg that was written by James E. Chessor was published in the paper.

Wartime news items included: Joe Dudley volunteered for the U. S. Navy. John Peters and Fred Pollock were nearing completion of a 14-week training cycle at Fort Leonard Wood and were scheduled to be sent overseas with the Army.

Approximately $250 was raised by the VFW Auxiliary during the Memorial Day Poppy Sale.

Judge William Humphreys requested that teachers who formerly attended the “Teachers Institute” at Newburg attend a preliminary meeting of retired teachers at the Courthouse on June 3rd for the purpose of planning a Teachers Research Institute.


Mr. and Mrs. Naymond Graves announced the birth of their daughter, Linda Sue.

Funeral services were held for Richard Skelton, 74; and for King Sylvis, 78.

“Quebec,” starring Connie Calvert and Patrick Knowles, and “Canyon Raiders,” starring Whip Wilson, were the Friday and Saturday night double feature at the Strand Theatre.

June 01, 1961

The City of Hohenwald published regulations for the new, paid garbage collection service set to begin on June 1, 1961.

The Board of Directors of the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club announced that all facilities (golf course, swimming pool, skeet range, club house, and picnic facilities) would now be closed to Lewis County residents who were not members of the golf club.


A golf team from Lawrenceburg won first place in the Tennessee Regional High School Invitational Golf Tournament held at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club.

Erron Anderson was promoted in the U. S. Navy to the rank of aviation fire control technician second class.

Dempsey Goodman, serving aboard the USS Navarro, participated in “Exercise Green Light” operations off the coast of California.

Residents invested $17,523 in U. S. Savings Bonds during the first four months of the year.

Funeral services were held for Gary Jones.

“Posse from Hell,” starring Audie Murphy, and “Wizard of Baghdad” were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Highlands Drive-In.


June 03, 1971

Horace Lawson was hired as City Recorder for the City of Hohenwald.

Johnny Williams, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. N. T. Plummer, was presented the Athlete of the Year award at the Miami Herald’s 8th annual All-City Awards Banquet.

Dee Gee Lester was selected for a musical and dramatic production, title Daniel and the Lions Den, which would be presented in Gatlinburg during the summer of 1971.

Donnie Pollock announced his purchase of an interest in the Quick-Serv Service Station from Jerry Jones.

Mr. and Mrs. George Bragg announced the birth of their daughter, Serena Yevette.

Funeral services were held for Johnny Bastin, 18; and for Fred Fain, 58.

“The House that Screamed,” starring Lili Palmer, and “Brighty of the Grand Canyon” starring Joseph Cotten, were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

May 28, 1981

A number of Lewis County residents attended a HALT (Hickman Against Lethal Trash) meeting and discovered that a contractor for the handling of toxic waste had arranged to lease 1,700 acres in the Brush Creek/Aetna area 12 miles north of Hohenwald for use as a toxic waste management site.

Maryland “Yogie” Spears was appointed to the Board of Trustees of Freed-Hardeman College.

Yard of the Week winners were Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Adkins, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Hickerson, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Hensley, and Mr. and Mrs. Pickard Griner.

Briana Bell, Michelle Carroll, Poppy Hedrick, Tammy Holt, Tracy James, Christina Runions, and Nikki Spiess were Grand Champion winners at the Lewis County Baton Twirling Festival.

Tommy Carroll announced that the American Legion would be conducting a survey of veterans in Lewis County would be made to determine benefits to which each veteran was entitled.

A Grand Opening was held for Hohenwald Machine Works at their new facility on Old Gordonsburg Road.

A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was held to officially open twelve new housing units for the elderly built through the Hohenwald Housing Authority.

Senior Citizens, aged 80 or older, were honored at a tea held at the Senior Citizens Center.

Barry Hinson, Benny Pace, Mark Rogers, and Kerry Seiber were selected to play in the first Mid-state Class A All-Star game.

Mr. and Mrs. Michael Hickerson announced the birth of their son, Michael Larry Jr.

Funeral services were held for Rex Grimes, 64; William Myatt, 82; and for Carsie Sircy.

“The Howling” was the weekend feature at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.

May 30, 1991

Heavy rains over Memorial Day weekend caused damage to throughout the county. A total of 14 inches of rain fell in Hohenwald and 11.5 inches fell in the Buffalo Road area. Power and telephone outages occurred throughout the county, in addition to, $150,000 in damage to bridges and roads. This was the third weekend in two months with weather-related problems in the county.

Lewis Community Hospital announced the addition of Doctors Alex Heffington and Lok Kong to their medical staff.

Kim Keeton was named a Golden Poet Award winner by the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the World of Poetry in Sacramento, CA.

The following births were announced: Shayna Rhella, daughter of Robert and Sharla Bowman; and Shauna Rae, daughter of Bruce and Sandy Gildersleeve.

Mr. and Mrs. Ottis Carroll celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reception held at the Lewis County Senior Citizens Community Room.

Funeral services were held for Hugh Duncan, 89; Betty Hollie, 58; and Delcia Littrell, 84.

May 31, 2001

Lewis County’s unemployment was up five-tenths of a percentage point to 8.6 percent according to figures released by the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

The Lewis County Historical Society announced plans for a bronze statue to be placed upon the original stones from the monument which had been placed on Maple Street.

Jessica Fielder was selected to serve as a counselor for Volunteer Girls State.

Rodger and Jason Carroll caught a 50-pound catfish in the Tennessee River.

Derek Hinson, Michael Kelley, William McCann, April Odom, Ashley Tiller, and Hugh Wilson were named LCHS Students of the Month.

Cheryl Stanfill was named Employee of the Month at Lewis County Manor.

Funeral services were held for Hilda Barlow, 83; and for Eva Lankford, 91.
