June 14, 1951

An article about early Lewis County history written by James E. Chessor was published.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held for the educational building of the Hohenwald First Baptist Church.

Martha Sisco and Norma Spann were attending Girls State at Nashville.

Max Johnston enlisted in the U. S. Army.

Joe Talley enlisted in the U. S. Navy.

Fred Pollock left for overseas service with the U. S. Army. A number of friends gave him a going away party and presented him with Sterling Silver identification bracelet.

“Out West,” starring Jiggs and Maggie, and “Over the Border,” starring Johnny Mack Brown and Wendy Waldron, were the Friday and Saturday night double feature at the Strand Theatre.

In area news: Stills were raided and destroyed in Wayne and Lawrence County. A man was arrested in Wayne County and a juvenile arrested near the Lawrence-Giles County line; both were released under a $500 bond.

June 15, 1961

The Tri-County League received approval as a member league by the National Babe Ruth League. This league had been formed by teams from Centerville, Linden, Lobelville, and Hohenwald.

The home of Cloyd Beasley on Park Avenue South was being painted by the Lewis County Jaycees in connection with the Clean Up, Paint Up, Fix Up Campaign in progress.

Ward Harder and Jerry Turner attended American Legion Boys’ State.

Four members of the LCHS Class of 1961 enlisted in the U. S. Air Force. They were Jimmy Bartholomew, Wayne Bates, Carl Odom, and Jerry Peery.

The following births were announced: Leona Dean, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Willis; and Elizabeth Irene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Sharp.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. A. C. Holman, 79; Richard James, 69; and for Ethel Seiber, 70.

“Seven Ways from Sundown,” starring Audie Murphry, and “Legions of the Nile” were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Highlands Drive-In.

June 17, 1971

The Lewis County Quarterly Court Magistrates (now called County Commission) met in a called session to approve a lease contract for Lewis County Hospital and to adopt a new Business Tax Act passed by the Tennessee General Assembly.

Mrs. J. H. Warf, School Superintendent, announced that a summer art program would be held at Hohenwald Elementary from June 21 to August 13, with two classes daily.

The following news items were reported about residents serving in the U. S. Armed Forces: Navy Airman Jerry Sublett was serving aboard the USS Midway. Marine Sgt. Samuel Turner was serving with the Third Tank Battalion in Okinawa.

O. B. Howell announced the opening of camping facilities on a 400-acre farm on the Buffalo River.

Timothy Reed was awarded an Awana Timothy Award at a Father-Son Banquet held by the Evangelical Free Church in Schilled park, IL.

“Girl From Tobacco Row,” starring Tex Ritter and Rachel Romen, and “The Out-Of-Towners” starring Jack Lemmon and Sandy Dennis, were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

June 18, 1981

The James Lawson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution was confirmed and admitted to the National Society on June 4, 1981. Dorothy Turnbow was installed as Chapter Regent.

A member of the LCHS Class of 1981 filed a law suit against the high school principal, superintendent of schools, and the Lewis County Board of Education seeking the completion of her final exams and that she be granted her high school diploma.

Ben Anderson won first place in the 13-17 age men’s division in the statewide Tennessee State Parks Running Tour for 1980-81.

Craig Greeson and Bill Hensley attended American Legion Boys’ State.

Winners in the Yard of the Week contest were Mr. and Mrs. Homer Gilliam, Mr. and Mrs. Alton McLemore, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Spears, and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Talley.

Funeral services were held for James Holt, infant.

“Friday the 13th Part II” and “The Warriors” were weekend double feature at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.

June 13, 1991

Julie Tanner, a recent graduate of LCHS, was named Tennessee State Typing Champion and advanced to the national championship round in the AEG Olympia National Scholastic Typing Contest.

Sgt. Tammie Runions, Tennessee National Guard, was sent to Saudia Arabia.

Leon Hunter was elected president of the Hohenwald Lions Club.

The Lewis County Ministerial Association announced they would conduct a county-wide crusade the week of July 22 and running through July 26.

Local anglers reported the following catches: Ernest Conner and daughter, Sasha, caught a 4-pound, 25-inch long pike in the Buffalo River. Ryan Couch caught a string of crappie in the Little Buffalo River. Scottie McCann caught a large catfish in the Buffalo River. William Hull caught a string of catfish in the Buffalo River. Timmy Hobbs, John Huntley, and Mike Spurlock caught a 6.5-pound catfish in the Buffalo River. Charlie Morgan caught a largemouth and smallmouth bass while fishing with his grandfather at Farmers Exchange. Donnie Frazier caught a largemouth and smallmouth bass in the Buffalo River.

Nancy McDonald earned the use of a red Pontiac Grand Am from Mary Kay Cosmetics for her success as an independent beauty consultant.

Harold and Ellie Ashworth announced the birth of their daughter, Hannah Del’rece Nichole.

In area news: a contract postal carrier was killed in a possible robbery at Bon Aqua.

June 14, 2001

A woman was lifeflighted to Vanderbilt after receiving injuries in a head-on collision on East Main Street.

A Waynesboro man led Hohenwald Police on a 15-mile, high speed case. He was apprehended face up in the creek at Rockhouse with drugs and money in his possession.

David Stange, LCHS senior, was approved by the Lewis county Board of Education for submission as a nominee as high school representative to the Tennessee State Board of Education.

Hohenwald Police Chief Sam Livingston was presented a plaque of appreciation by Mayor Guy Nicholson.

Lewis County Schools was featured in the Chamber Spotlight column.

The Buffalo/Duck River Resource Conservation and Development’s Earth Team group was awarded the USDA/Natural Resource Conservation Service’s 2000 Earth Team Group Award.

NPS Ranger Peggy Scherbaum gave an oral history performance portraying Mary Beth Shannon at the Southwest Oral History Association meeting in Tempe, AZ.

Funeral services were held for Mattie Brewer, 87; Fred Harris, Jr., 72; Charlie Seiber, 76; and for John Waller, 80.
