One Day at a Time

Series: One day at a time | Story 25

October 28, 2021

Well it is a cool morning here in our little valley. It was too cool for me to sit on the porch swing, but not hardly cold enough to build a fire in the old wood heating stove. The cats were at the door ready for their breakfast. When the weather gets cold they get a bowl of good warm milk. This morning I only put their regular food out for them ad they just looked at it and came back to the door and sat down and waited. Some people say animals are dumb, they were waiting for their milk.

This has been a good week, I was hanging clothes out on the line yesterday and the wind was blowing and the leaves were falling and it was almost chilly. The neighbors cows were gazing peacefully in their pasture across the road. I was thinking how blessed we are. I was thinking about all the talk about the shortages, the gas prices going up and the cost of living going higher. You know we can all cut back a little, most of us have gotten a little spoiled. We get whatever we want whether we need it or just want it. Most of us older people were not raised that way, we had to work hard for what we had and we took care of what we had. Back then nobody wasted things and rarely threw anything away, we were careful with everything. We all worked hard. I was outside doing some little clean up jobs and I noticed some ants. I guess I have seen more ants this year then I can ever remember. I was watching them and they were carrying something, every one of them was busy. Then later that evening at almost dark I looked at them again and they were still busy. It was getting cool and starting to rain but they were not slowing down. When I see things like that I think of the old story of the grasshopper and the ants, seems to me the world needs some more ants.

I have canned some tomatoes this week but just a few jars. I think most of the gardens are gone for this year. I have talked to gardeners and some say that they had a good garden and some say that they didn’t have a good garden.

The days are getting shorter and it won’t be long before we will be rolling our clocks back a hour. I don’t know why we still do that, doesn’t make much sense to me. I know most of the Amish folks keep their clocks set at the same time and they don’t change their time.

For dinner today, we are having turnip greens, pinto beans, fried sweet potatoes and brown corn bread. Are you hungry yet, Ms. Callie Dunn?

The weather people are calling for rain this week and colder temperatures, so we will have to get the old wood heating stove ready and the wood on the porch. I will make a big pot of potato soup. Won’t that be good on a cold and rainy day?

Lets all pray for one another and help someone if you can. I am not going to worry about tomorrow, I am just going to take it one day at a time, God has it all under control and He is the light at the end of the tunnel.

God Bless.
