Annual Rifle Archery Deer Hunt for Purple Heart recipients held

November 4, 2021

With the help and support of a great community, DoubleCreek was able to hold their 7th annual Rifle Archery Deer Hunt for Purple Heart recipients. Representing heroes from Operation Enduring Freedom (EOF) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) were Army and Marine heroes from North Dakota, Georgia, Colorado, Missouri, and Indiana.

These Purple Heart veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan initiatives sustained injuries that will have a life-long impact on their overall health and well-being. They are very appreciative of the volunteer guides and other community members that are integral to the success of these events.

Volunteer guides included Jason Hay, Toby Adkins, Jared Hinson, Manny Moreton, and Dennis Reynolds. Betty Hinson, Tammy Adkins, Ron McMahon, Lana Molnar, the Hilliards, Kathy Wilson, Liza Mullen, and Amy Reynolds provided items for the meals. Side-by-side vehicles were provided by Clint Newton from Fish and Game, Travis Hinson, Billy Reese, and Paul Rawden. Highland Corporation donated cases of bottled water and funds used toward payment of hunting licenses. Additional financial donations from community members along with Kroger gift cards were provided by private donors- as you can see, it truly takes a whole community to come together so these heroes can experience a great hunt!.

"The WWIA event and DoubleCreek was awesome. I have been to a couple other veteran events that don't compare to this event. Great to visit with others that have been through the same. This was the best time I've had since retired." S. Kingsley MSG (retired)

"This was awesome and a great opportunity for wounded veterans to get together with other like-minded individuals. Thanks so much for the opportunity to come out to this hunt and all the cakes were the best ever." P. Brooks USMC Retired

"Such a release of the soul to be with other warriors and to be welcomed into stranger's worlds and be treated like family." R. Elder Army E5 Hon Discharge

This weekend of sportsmanship also offers a setting that encourages these heroes to connect with other Purple Heart recipients who understand the impact of being a wounded warrior.

This is the 8th year Dennis Reynolds and Shelley Cohen of DoubleCreek have hosted hunting events for WWIA. It is the love of the outdoors, sportsmanship and the need to connect with other Warriors that is critical to the healing process. Whether it is traumatic brain injury, limb/back disability or post-traumatic stress disorder, or survivor's guilt - these events bolster self-confidence while strengthening a bond with nature and others.

The support of the local community helps to ensure the success of these events and we extend a big thank you to our volunteer guides as well as those who helped with food preparation and sleeping arrangements.
