Panthers playoff run ends

The Lewis County High School Panthers football team travelled to Chapel Hill to take on the Forrest Rockets in second round of the 2021 TSSAA Football Playoffs on Friday night, November 12th with a stiff, cool wind and the threat of rain.

It was the Rockets who got on the board first when, three minutes into the opening quarter, Gavin Garrison connected on a 45-yard field goal to give Forrest a 3-0 lead early.

The Rockets would mount a scoring drive on their next possession of the first quarter when quarterback Hunter Bennett hit Brenton Burchell on a 27-yard scoring strike and Grissom added the point-after to give Forrest a 10-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Panther offense would continue to sputter through the first half, but the Rockets would tack on three more points before halftime when Grissom was good from 28-yards out to give Forrest a 13-0 lead at the half.

The team swere stalemated in the third quarter as both defenses held ground and the score remained Forrest 13, Lewis County 0 moving into the final twelve minutes of regulation.

About four minutes into the fourth quarter Lewis County quarterback Bryson McDonald would find Dyer Barnes for a 16-yard touchdown pass, but the PAT from Blake Carroll would be no good and the Panthers would be down 13-6 with eight minutes to play.

The Panthers would fight to make the comeback, but their season would come to an end at the hands of the Forrest Rockets 13-6.

Lincoln Brewer led the Panther ground attack with 68 yards on 7 carries, Blake Carroll 19 carries for 59 yards, Kael Feichtinger 6 carries for 23 yards, and Bryson McDonald 2 carries for 3 yards. McDonald was 4 for 8 passing for 70 yards and a touchdown. Blake Carroll caught 3 passes for 54 yards and Dyer Barnes 1 pass for 16 yards and a touchdown.

Hunter Smith had 12 tackles for the Panther defense, Kael Feichtinger 11 tackles, Dyer Barnes and Lincoln Brewer 8 tackles, Dominic Seiber, Jaydon Stewart, and Chaz Sparkman 6 tackles, Eli Carroll 5 tackles, Bentley Kelsey 4 tackles, Ayden Dunn 3 tackles, and Lane Barnes, Kade Skelton, and Cole Farr 1 tackle each.

The Panthers finished the 2021 campaign with an 8-4 record, falling out in the second round of the 2021 Playoffs.
