LCMS Basketball tournament in Murfreesboro

The Lewis County Middle School Lady Panthers basketball team concluded their season at the James C. Haile State Tournament on Saturday, January 15th in Murfreesboro.
In the opening round of the Haile Tournament, the Lady Panthers were matched with the Winfree Bryant Middle School Lady Aviators from Lebanon. The Lady Aviators pressured the Lady Panthers from the tip and outscored Lewis County 16-2 in the first six minutes of play. The second quarter saw a better defensive effort from the Lady Panthers, but they were unable to crack the Lady Aviator defense in the period and were held scoreless as Winfree Bryant took a 24-4 lead in at the half The third quarter was another big quarter for the Lady Aviators as they pulled away with 19 points in the period and held a 43-6 lead as play moved into the final quarter. With a running clock in the final six minutes, the Lady Aviators cruised to a 48-8 win. Klayr Shepherd and Emery Norris each had 4 points for Lewis County.

The Lewis County Middle School Lady Panthers and Panthers returned to action on January 13th as they traveled to Centerville to take on the Hickman County Lady Bulldogs and Bulldogs.
In the girls’ matchup, the Lady Panthers struggled to find the basket in the opening quarter. Hickman County limited the Lady Panthers to a lone Emery Norris free throw in the first quarter and took a 9-1 lead after the first Lewis County bounced back in the second with 6 points from Klayr Shepherd and trailed the Lady Bulldogs 18-9 at the half. The second half started with the Lady Panthers again going cold from the floor, as the only points they could manage in the third quarter were 3 from Klayr Shepherd and the Lady Bulldogs pulled out to a 30-12 lead heading into the fourth. Hickman County would cruise through the fourth quarter on their way to a 40-15 win. Klayr Shepherd had 10 points to lead the Lady Panthers, Addie Osborne and Greer Lewis each had 2, and Emery Norris had 1.
In the boys matchup, it was the Bulldogs that jumped out in front early. The home team went on a 10-0 run to start the game, shutting out Lewis County in the first quarter, and held a double-digit lead after the first six minutes of play. The Panthers would respond in the second quarter as they fought back and took the lead behind a 19-8 period and held a 19-18 lead as the teams left the court at halftime. Lewis County would keep the momentum in the third quarter as they outscored the Bulldogs 12-8 in the third quarter and held on to a 31-26 lead as play moved on to the fourth quarter The Bulldogs couldn’t crack the Panther defense in the final period, and Lewis County would roll to a 41-33 on the road. Jalen Smith led the Panthers with 12 points, Bo Banks and Maddox Tanner each had 7, Drew Ray and Dakota Hull each scored 6, and Phenix McDonald had 3.
