Portable generators have become more commonplace as a backup source for power, but they can also cause serious injury and even death if used or installed improperly.

• Never connect generators directly to your home’s wiring. The reverse flow of electricity can electrocute utility workers or others that might come in contact with the power line. (The only safe way to connect a portable electric generator to your existing wiring is to have a licensed electrical contractor install a transfer switch.
