March 20, 1952

Federal aid was being sought for completion of the seven-mile, uncompleted stretch of State Highway 99 between Gordonsburg and Hampshire.

City Recorder R.C. Spann reported that numerous complaints were being received almost daily about poultry being allowed to run at large on the property of others. Citizens were reminded that Ordinance No. 140, passed April 2, 1938, prohibited the running at large of all poultry within the town.

The Glee Club announced that a “Minstrel Show” would be held at LCHS on March 21. Proceeds would be donated toward high school band uniform fund.

Thirteen members of the LCHS band participated in a band competition at Murfreesboro on March 15. Bobby Graves, trumpet; and Jimmie Turnbow, trombone, received an “A” rating and were awarded medals.

After having been postponed for some time, the American Legion announced that they would resume their Saturday night Square Dances on March 22. Music would be furnished by Clip Bates’ String Band and Fred Lynch would call the sets.

Fred Pollock who was stationed in Tokyo, Japan, reported in a letter to the newspaper that J.O. Yokley, who was also stationed in Japan, spent March 7th with him.

Doris Graves, Edna Pollock, and Ernestine Pollock attended the state F.H.A. convention in Nashville, TN.

Funeral services were held for William Goeman; and for John Mathis, 69.

“Blonde Dynamite,” starring Leo Gorcey and the Bowery Boys, and “Over the Border,” starring Johnny Mack Brown, were the Friday and Saturday night films showing at the Strand Theatre.

March 22, 1962

MVA Motor Company received a Ford Motor Company Distinguished Achievement Award.

Larry Tatum was serving aboard the USS Coral Sea which was scheduled to arrive in Yokosuka, Japan on March 16.

Dempsey Goodman was serving aboard the USS Navarro.

Hershel Harris was awarded an Army Good Conduct Medal while serving with the 11th Artillery at Fort Campbell.

Howard Halfacre was attending a Navy Amphibious School at Forfolk, VA.

Mr. and Mrs. Allen York celebrated their 50th anniversary with an open house held at their home.

Funeral services were held for Mary Armstrong, 80.

“The Oklahoman,” starring Joel McCrea and Barbara Hale, and “Operation Bottleneck,” starring Miiko Take and Ron Foster were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

March 23, 1972

Winners of drawings for free prizes at the Brown’s Variety Store Grand Opening were Imogene Brown, Linda Hensley, Hazel O’Guin, Mrs. John Riley, and Lerah Tutor.

Two juveniles were arrested and charged with break-ins at the Phillips 66 Station on Highway 20 and Quality Market on Pine Street.

An alumni basketball game of Lewis County versus Hickman County alumni was scheduled for March 23.

Terry Cotham completed an Aviation Electronics Technician School at Millington.

Jackie Wix completed a law enforcement course at Lackland Air Force Base, TX.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Webb announced the birth of their daughter, Delana Michele.

Funeral services were held for Frank Hensley, 80; and for Olivia Dudley, 75.

“Ryan’s Daughter,” starring Robert Mitchum, Trevor Howard, Christopher Jones, John Mills, Leo McKern, and Sarah Miles, was the Friday and Saturday night movie at the Highlands Drive-In.

March 25, 1982

An Ohio man was arrested at a residence on Wildcat Road when Deputy Robert Conner responded to a call by a neighbor and caught the man in the act of holding the tied up resident at gunpoint with a .25 caliber automatic.

A Columbia man was arrested at Jr. Food Mart and charged with possession of a controlled substance.

Lewis County PTO announced they would hold a Community Auction to raise funds for their organization on April 24.

Brian Grinder caught three trout while fishing with his grandfather at GETAWAH Lakes near Coble.

The following births were announced: David Thomas, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. David Edwards; and Brandon Wade, son of Mr. and Mrs. Timmy Carroll.

Funeral services were held for Willie Mathis, 74; and for Tom Seiber, 69.

“Sharkey’s Machine,” with Burt Reynolds was the weekend movie at the Highlands Drive-In.

March 19, 1992

The Herald reported that the Governor’s transportation budget for 1993 would include funds to study future improvements to Highway 99 in Lewis and Maury counties. The study of the 26 miles between Hohenwald and Columbia was supposed to be part of a total $451 highway improvement program.

Bill Bates was promoted to the position of President of the Lewis County Bank. Bates served as Vice-President and CEO since the bank was organized in 1983.

Amy Tatum was selected to attend the Governor’s School for the Sciences at UT-Knoxville. Jane Rodriguez was selected to serve as an alternate to the Governor’s School of the Arts at MTSU. Christy Wix was selected to attend the Governor’s School for International Studies at Memphis State University.

Arelus Dye shot a hole-in-one at the first hole at the Hohenwald Golf and Recreation Club on March 15, 1992. This was the fourth hole-in-one that Mrs. Dye made.

Joyce Page was featured in the weekly “Teacher Feature” column.

A dance was scheduled for March 28 at the Hohenwald Golf & Country Club. Admission was $8.00 per couple.

John Mills, a member of the Navy Reserve, returned home after two weeks’ active duty at Pearl Harbor, HI.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Summertown with a score of 8 to 0 during the opening game of the baseball season. Jason Graves pitched all 7 innings, allowing 1 hit and striking out 3.

E.B. Peery was honored for his 75th birthday with a dinner given at his home by his wife.

An open house was held for Judy Pratt in honor of her completion of the LPN nursing program in Columbia.

Mike and Melissa McClain announced the birth of their daughter, Lyndsey Elizabeth.

Funeral services were held for Virgil Carroll, 41.

March 21, 2002

Jennifer Mitchell was named Valedictorian of the LCHS Class of 2002. Jonathan Jones was named Salutatorian.

Former resident James Stowe was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame for his successful football coaching career.

The Lewis County Commission agreed to invite Integrated Correctional Services International, Inc. to come hold an open meeting where all Commissioners and the public could be present to discuss aspects of the jail expansion.

A Minor Hill man was arrested on charges of theft of property and burglary.

Hans Schwendimann and Adam Willis were selected as delegates for the American Legion Boys State. Kyle Hamm and Johnny Mendez were chosen as alternates.

A. C. Walker retired from Dana Corporation after 34 years of continuous service.

Brenda Amacher was recognized for 35 years of continuous service with Dana Corporation, and Willard Churchwell was presented an award for 30 years of service.

Hettie Grimes was honored for her 93rd birthday with a celebration held at Lewis County Manor.

Funeral services were held for Dortha Wells, 85.
