Ice House demolished

Scott Higgins of TAZ Excavating was hired by the Lewis County Historical Society to demolish what has been known as 'The Ice House," citing safety concerns of the deteriating structure.

A long time fixture of Hohenwald, the Ice House was demolished Tuesday, April 12, citing safety concerns with the building. The property is owned by The Lewis County Historical Society.

Announced in the Lewis County Herald in the January 20, 1927 edition, 'Hohenwald to get modern ice plant; coca cola plant to operate in connection with ice plant.'

Built on property on Mill Street across from what is now Highland Corporation, the Hohenwald Coal and Ice Company went in service in May of 1927 operated by J.S.Patterson and boasted of a 12 ton daily capacity. The cost of the plant was approxi...
