Former Superintendent of Schools Dennis Whittenberg passes away

 

Dennis E. Whittenberg passed away peacefully on Friday, June 17th, 2022, at the age of 91. Mr. Whittenberg was born on November 14, 1930, in Hohenwald, to Dennis E. and Delphia (Poag) Whittenberg. He was married to Roberta F. (Geralds) Whittenberg until her passing in 2012.

He graduated from Lewis County High School and obtained a B.S. Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi and then his MEd and Eds from MTSU. Dennis was a decorated veteran with over twenty years of military service, having joined the US Air Force in 1950. He subsequently served over twenty-one years as the Superintendent/Director of Lewis County Schools. He retired from that position in 1999. His legacy includes many building programs for the school system.

Along with his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one step-son, James F. Whittenberg.

He is survived by his beloved son, Frank G. (Terry) Whittenberg of Hohenwald; step-son, Thomas E. (Erika) Whittenberg of Lawton, Oklahoma; grandchild, Stephanie Nicole (Dustin) Whittenberg-Carroll, step-grandchild, Shane (Sabrina) Baker; great-grandchildren, Eli Jordan Whittenberg and Kylie Rae Carroll, and step great-grandchildren, Chasity Paige Baker, Chanley Rae Baker, and Diesel Davis Baker.

Funeral services were held on Monday, June 20, in the McDonald Funeral Home Chapel. Judge Mike Spitzer officiated. A private family burial will take place later.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Lewis County Public Library & Archives Building Expansion Fund.
