July 03, 1952

The Lewis County Civic Club’s Fair Committee decided not to hold an annual fair in 1952 due to the fact that they had been unable to secure a reputable carnival for their set date.

The Bureau of Public Roads approved the addition of State Highway No. 99 to the Primary System.

The Herald reported that “the longest May and June drought in the history of the county has been partially broken here with local showers” which began falling June 29, 1952. Heat records for June were also broken in the county.

Charlotte Bennett and Malcolm Leigh were completing the basic airmen indoctrination course at Lackland Air Force Base. Private First Class Sherman Bunch was ordered to port of embarkation for overseas duty.

The American Legion baseball team defeated Lawrenceburg with a score of 9 to 8 and Columbia with a score of 5 to 2. The Herald noted that the team was beginning to “play the kind of ball that they are capable of.”


Funeral services were held for Robert Whitaker, 72.

“Flaming Feather,” starring Sterling Hayden and Forrest Tucker, and “West of Pecos,” starring Robert Mitchum and Barbara Hale, were the Friday and Saturday night movies showing at the Strand Theatre.

July 05, 1962

The Oak Grove Fish Fry was scheduled to be held on Friday, July 05. The Herald reported that R.E. and Teeny Clay would “keep cooking until all have been amply fed.” The cost for the “all you can eat” meal was $1.50.

Carol Lawson joined the staff of Lewis County Hospital as “the first registered nurse employed in Hohenwald in many years.”


The newspaper ran an editorial about the recent “violent public reaction to the decision of the Supreme Court in outlawing the reading of a non-sectarian prayer in the New York public schools.”

Mr. and Mrs. George Spears held a family reunion at their home with over 40 in attendance.

The following births were announced: Terry Edwards, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Quillen; and William Jeffery, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alton Camron.

Mr. and Mrs. Alton McLemore celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with a family reunion held at Meriwether Lewis Park.

Advertised specials this week at Piggly Wiggly included a gallon of vinegar for $0.39 and a 12 oz can of Spam for $0.39.


“Beyond All Limits,” starring Maria Felix and Jack Palance; “Elephant Gun,” starring Belinda Lee and Michael Craig; and “The Explosive Generation,” starring William Shatner and Patty McCormack, were the Friday and Saturday-night triple feature shown at the Highlands Drive-In and at the Strand Theatre.

July 06, 1972

The Lewis County Blues placed first in the season among seven teams in Lewis, Perry, and Wayne County. They won eleven games and lost only three. Members of the team were: Tommy Barnett, Johnny Bunch, Mark Couch, Greg Devore, Greg Edwards, Steve Edwards, Jeff Grimes, Larry Johnson, Bobby Page, Ricky Frazier, Ronnie Frazier, David Sheffer, Terry Skelton, and Jackie White.

A family reunion for the family of the late Jessie R. and Laura Duncan was held on July 1 at the community room at Hohenwald Bank.

The Royson Bros. Circus advertised that they would perform in Hohenwald for “one day only” on July 15, 1972. The event was sponsored by the Jaycees.

A 20 oz. box of Cheer detergent cost $0.25 and 10 lbs. of potatoes were on sale for $0.99 at McClearen’s IGA.

Funeral services were held for George Wiss, 71.

“Hell Boats,” starring James Franciscus, and “Such Good Friends,” starring Dyan Cannon and James Coco, were the Friday and Saturday night movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In.

July 08, 1982

Tatsuo Suzuki taught a karate clinic in Hohenwald at the Wado-Ryu Karate School on July 01. Suzuki was an 8th degree black belt holder from London, England.

A child was injured in a mower accident. According to reports the child was riding on a lawn mower driven by her brother, when she apparently jumped from the mower.

Kimberly Staggs was named to the Dixie Youth major league All Star team.

Funeral services were held for Frank Baldwin, 65; and for Oda Stevens, 75.

Fryers were on sale at Harris Cee Bee for $0.49 a pound. A four-pound bag of Martha White flour cost $0.88 at Morrow’s Bi-Rite and Foodtown.

“Star Trek II,” starring William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy; and “The Hunter,” starring Steve McQueen were the Friday and Saturday double feature showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theatre.

July 09, 1992

A small tornado touched down in Lewis County early Friday, July 3, causing damage to a local home.

Tommy Fransen was elected president of the Lewis County Civitan Club.

Marie Miller retired from H.I.S., after 29 years of service. She was presented a watch by plant manager Terry Colley.

CSM Billy Sharp retired from the Army after 22.5 years of service. A retirement ceremony was held at Ft. Campbell, KY.

Randy Hickerson found an armadillo on July 2, approximately 3 to 4 miles from the Maury County line on Hwy 412. This was one of several then-recent sightings of the new animal in the area.

Mike Taylor qualified for the A.M.A. National Motorcross Finals to be held on August 11 at Loretta Lynn’s Dude Ranch.

Funeral services were held for Ellis Burns, 57.

July 04, 2002

The Tennessee Board of Regents voted unanimously on June 30 to suspend operations of all TBR institutions effective July 3 in the event that the General Assembly did not approve a budget by midnight. The Tennessee Technology Center at Hohenwald suspended school operation on July 1; however, the child care center remained open.

The state’s budget woes left the Hohenwald City Council in a state of uncertainty at their July 2nd meeting, necessitating that a special meeting be called for July 12 to address setting the tax rate.

Business Development Week was set for July 8 through 11 with a kick-off luncheon scheduled for July 8 at the Community Building in Memorial Park.

Keith Ray graduated from the Tennessee Highway Patrol Training Center in Nashville.

The J. M. Adcox Memorial Horse Show was held June 28th. The newspaper reported that “the crowd showed great compassion for a tragedy that occurred in Class 3’s Amateur 2-Year Old Open class… [a horse] fell at the beginning of the class. The rider, who was unhurt during the fall, was unable to get the horse up. Within two or three minutes, the horse died from an apparent heart attack… It was reported that the horse had just been purchased for $25,000.”

Jimmy and Kimberly Reeves announced the birth of their son, Brent Lane.

Funeral services were held for Elva DeVault, 81; James Garland, 59; Elizabeth Morton, 75; and for Mary Sweeney, 91.
