July 31, 1952

The Lewis County Herald announced that it would run one day early on its next issue so that voters could receive the most up-to-date election information in order to make an informed decision prior to casting their vote on August 7.

R. K. Roney was elected 7th District Commander of the Tennessee American Legion.

Ward Clayton arrived in Korea and was serving with the 1st Division, U. S. Marine Corps.

Funeral services were held for Bessie Scheiwiller, 34.

Mary’s Flower Shop, operated by Mary Ammons and Mrs. Ray Grimes, advertised that it was now open in the back of Ray’s Drug Store.

“Sugarfoot” starring Randolph Scott and Adele Jergens; and “Father Makes Good” starring Raymond Walburn and Walter Catlett were the Friday and Saturday night movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

“A Lady without Passport” starring Hedy Lamarr and John Hodiak; and “Leadville Gunslinger” starring Rocky Lane and Eddie Millerwere the Friday and Saturday double feature shown at the Strand Theatre.

August 02, 1962

Southern Bell announced that Hohenwald telephone numbers would have a new look in September 1962 when the numbers would change from two letters and five numbers to seven numerals.

Four juvenile boys were arrested in connection with recent break-ins within the county. The boys admitted to breaking and entering Kidd Auto Parts, the Memorial Park Stand, Pierce Gas Station, and John Tally’s Furniture Store.

Jim Thurman, formerly of Nashville, joined the Lewis County Hospital staff as an X-ray technician.

Employees of Genesco gathered at Oak Park Pool outside of Columbia, TN for their annual picnic.

The following births were announced: Connie Fran, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Johnston; Debra Arlene, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Grinder; Betty Jean, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Burlison; Trent Douglas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Humphreys; and Russel Todd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Monett.

Funeral services were held for Keith Hinson, infant.

“The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance,” starring James Stewart and John Wayne; and “The Kettles on Old McDonald’s Farm,” starring Marjorie Main and Parker Fennelly, were the Friday and Saturday-night double feature shown at the Highlands Drive-In and at the Strand Theatre.

August 03, 1972

The Fairest of the Fair contest was scheduled for August 18. Mrs. Mann Nutt would serve as pageant director.

Candy Stripers at Lewis County Hospital were honored with certificates of recognition for donating 20 hours or more of volunteer service. Earning certificates were Michele Berwick, Sherry Brewer, Teresa Bunch, Glenda Garrad, Lisa Griner, Connie Hankins, Diane Lawson, Joyce Mathis, Enola Melton, Cathy Morton, Teresa Peters, Sylvia Shannon, Judy Shaw, Debbie Seiber, Debbie Sisco, Connie Spiess, Faye Staggs, Nancy Stiltner, Marsha Tatum, Teresa Tatum, Anita Walker, Shirley Webster, Nancy Weeks, LaQuita White, Cindy Willis, and Debbie Willis.

The following births were announced: Joey Glenn, son of Charles and Beverly Potts; Julee Denese, daughter of Larry and Carla Reed; and Melinda Renee, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gray.

Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Cook were honored on their 66th wedding anniversary with a reception held at the community room of the Hohenwald Bank and Trust.

Funeral services were held for Ollie Adkins, 79; William Amos, 78; Delphia Mayfield, 78; Raymond Melton III, 24; Vinia McNabb, 83; Robert Pevyhouse, 78; William Pope, 35; and for Fred Whitehead, 31.

Alvis Hinson announced the grand opening of Hinson’s Handi Stop on August 3-5. A sack of groceries worth $10 would be given away every hour on the hour from 11 am to 10 pm each day of the opening celebration.

Highland Oil Company and participating Arco dealers advertised the changeover of Arco to Texaco gasoline, oil, greases, batteries, and accessories effective August 7th.

“Star Spangled Girl,” starring Sandy Duncan and Tony Roberts; and “Horror on Snape Island,” starring Bryant Haliday and Jill Haworth, were the Friday and Saturday night movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In.

August 05, 1982

A contract was let by the National Park Service for work on the Natchez Trace Parkway in Hickman and Lewis County. The contract called for hot bituminous concrete pavement for bridge repair and miscellaneous work.

The National Guard Unit in Hohenwald would display a variety of equipment at the monthly Hohenwald Retail Merchants sale on August 7.

The 1st annual Lewis County Baseball Tractor Pull was scheduled for August 7 at Memorial Park. Proceeds of the event would be used for the baseball program at Memorial Park.

Burglars broke into Freedom Holy Temple on August 03, taking two guitars and an amplifier.

The local National Guard unit was scheduled to display several types of equipment at the Hohenwald Retail Merchants monthly sale on August 7.

The following births were announced: Forrest Lee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Berry; Matthew Michael, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Sullivan; Ryan Lewis, son of Dr. and Mrs. Randall Dabbs; and Lindsey Rae, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Cummings.

Mr. and Mrs. William A. Hull celebrated their 33rd wedding anniversary at their home.

Mrs. James O. Hinson was honored for her birthday with a surprise dinner held at Swanview Restaurant.

Funeral services were held for Broy Dycus, 71; and for Waldine Fite, 54.

“Rocky III,” starring Sylvester Stallone, was the movie showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre from August 5 to August 11, 1982.

August 06, 1992

The Lewis County Chamber of Commerce presented a proposal to the City Council to finance the employment of an Executive Director and Industrial recruiter. The Council decided to defer a vote on the matter until the full body could be present.

Terry Bunch and Kenneth Kistler were appointed as co-chairs over the sesquicentennial committee. The group would organize celebrations to honor the 150th anniversary of the establishment of Lewis County.

The Lewis Civitan club published a registration form for children wishing to enter the first annual pet parade.

Glenda Atkinson and Barbara Hinson attended the 71st Annual Pilot International Convention held in Chicago, IL.

Mr. and Mrs. Osbie B. Graves celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reception held at Chappel Memorial United Methodist Church in Flatwoods.

Funeral services were held for Mattie Marlin, 80; Jackie Wayland, 40; and for Rachel Whitehead, 47.

August 01, 2002

The Lewis County Commission voted to lower the property tax rate from $2.03 down to $1.86.

John Mayfield was named Vice President of Operations for Bob Parks Reality in Murfreesboro.

V & W Ready Mix had a new Pepsi machine installed at the business. Martha Vaughn was told that this was “the only computerized machine of its kind in Middle Tennessee.”

Jeremiah James graduated from basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO.

Funeral services were held for Curtis Gobel, Jr., 58.
