January 29, 1953

It was announced that meetings would be held in various communities throughout the county for the purpose of explaining what tax increase would be needed to finance the payment of bonds for the construction of a county-city factory building.

The Herald published a front-page announcement to debunk local rumors that only property owners would be allowed to vote in the February 21 bond election. The requirements for voting would be the same as in any state or county election. Those people who lived in the city limits would vote in both the City and County elections.

John J. Scheiwiller sold his Variety Store to C.R. Bell, owner and manager of the Western Auto Associate Store. Scheiwiller would retire from business after more than 35 years as “one of Hohenwald’s best-known businessmen.”

The Lewis County Ministerial Association was organized on January 26. Marvin Whitehead was elected the first president of the organization.

Guy Voorhies was honored for his 85th birthday with a turkey dinner with all the trimmings at his home.

H.F. Lawson, Jr. volunteered into the U.S. Army Air Force.

Mr. and Mrs. Leo Amacher announced the birth of their son, Neal.

“Retreat, Hell,” starring Frank Lovejoy, Richard Carlson, Rusty Tamblyn, and Anita Louise; and “Hills of Utah,” starring Gene Autry, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Strand Theatre.

January 31, 1963

The Lewis County Court were scheduled to meet in a called session on February 2 to consider issuing $2.5 million in industrial revenue bonds, with a portion of the bonds being available for an expansion program at Lewis Products Company.

A basketball game between the Hohenwald All-Star independent team and the Nashville Genesco team would be held at the LCHS gym to raise money for the March of Dimes polio campaign.

Charley Conder was serving with the Army’s 23rd Transportation Company in Baumholder, Germany.

A party was held January 17 at the General Café for 100 percent members of the Home Demonstration Clubs in Lewis County.

Elmer Adair was honored for his birthday with a dinner at his home in San Pedro, CA.

Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Rochelle celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the home of their daughter, Joy Matt and family in Nashville.

“A Very Private Affair,” starring Brigitte Bardot and Marcello Mastroianni; and “Herod the Great,” starring Edmund Purdom and Sylvia Lopez, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In and at the Strand Theatre.

In area news: planned recreational facilities at Laurel Hill Lake were nearing completion.

February 1, 1973

Naymond Graves was honored for outstanding sales performance at the United Farm Agency, Inc.’s International Awards Conference in Freeport, Grand Bahamas.

Wayne, Ronnie, and Lynn Tiller would compete in the Golden Gloves Tournament planned for February 1-3 at the Jackson Coliseum. They were regular participants in the Jackson, TN Boxing Club fight nights with a record of 19 wins and 9 losses.

Richard Lay reported for duty at Marine Corps Air Station at New River, NC.

Walter Mayer, Park Ranger at Meriwether Lewis National Park, reported that the temperature fell to a low 5 degrees on January 11; the high temperature of 64 occurred on January 16. A total of 4.09 inches of rain fell during January 1973.

The Hohenwald Pantherettes defeated Mt. Pleasant with a score of 58 to 28. Susie Davis was the top scorer for the team with 20 points. The Pantherettes also defeated Hampshire with a score of 61 to 38. Michelle Berwick led the team in scoring with 22 points.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Hampshire with a score of 82 to 49. Randy Carroll and Jamie Hamm both tied for top scorer with 16 points each. The Panthers also defeated Linden with a score of 68 to 53. Randy Carroll led the team in scoring with 21 points.

Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Duvall announced the birth of their son, Richard James.

Marvin Cotton was honored with a birthday dinner at his home given by his wife.

Thelma Rosson, Mrs. Johnny Davis, and Wilburn Davis were honored with a birthday dinner given by Mrs. Wilburn Davis.

Mrs. Pearl Nutt, Mrs. Claytie Nutt, and Carmel Nutt were honored with a surprise birthday dinner at the Riverside Community Building.

Funeral services were held for Sally Brewer, 82; Joseph Brown, 85; Mrs. Carl Hardin, 65; James Runions, 88; Gladys Shulte; and for Basil Staggs, 70.

“Top of the Heap,” starring Paula Kelley St. John, and “Brute Corps,” starring Paul Carr and Alex Bocco, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In.

February 3, 1983

The Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Assocation’s Board of Control reclassified approximately 30 schools. LCHS was assigned to District IX, Region V, Class AA.

A new base for the Veterans Memorial Monument was built by students at the Hohenwald Area Vocational-Technical School Buildings Trace Class. The monument, originally located near the public library, would be moved to its new location in front of the Court House. V&W Ready Mix donated the concrete for the base.

W.B. Cooper, City Recorder for the City of Hohenwald, resigned from his position to begin his retirement effective February 05.

Dr. Robert Wingate, who one month earlier announced opening an office for medical practice in the county, closed his office and issued a statement to the people of Hohenwald thanking them for their friendship.

Chad Clayton was the first place winner in the annual Pinewood Derby of Cub Scout Pack 322.

The LCHS Lady Panthers defeated Waynesboro with a score of 53 to 41. Denise Goodman was the top scorer for the team with 11 points.

Mr. and Mrs. Terry Lawson announced the birth of their son, Brandon Michael.

Funeral services were held for James Harder, 40; and for James Kelley, 45.

“Office Girls” and “Julie” were the weekend movies showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theatre.

February04, 1993

LCHS was presented a portrait of A.B. Sisco during the halftime of the girls game with Hickman County. The portrait, painted by Joy Garner of Nashville, was unveiled by Sisco’s daughter, Carole Smith and was assisted by Jane Cherry, who chaired the project that was spear-headed by a group of L.C.H.S. alumni.

A retirement party was held on January 26 to honor Wylie Blocker for 38 years of service at H.I.S.

Terry Duncan was recognized for 25 years of service with Genesco-Laredo/Code West.

Jeffrey Stevens was selected for a twelve-month cooperative education assignment with the United States Geological Survey in Nashville.

The LCMS basketball team placed second in the district, and would travel to Springfield to play in the TNT State Tournament on February 6.

Roxanne Podesta won second place in fighting in the 15-17-year-old girls division at the 1993 WAKO-USA National Championship and Team Trials held in Evensville, IN.

Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Clayton encountered a sign marked “Hohenwalde School Road” while driving on Hwy 290 in Texas between Houston and Austin.

Christine Lay enlisted in the United States Navy.

William McCann was featured in the Lewis County School’s “Staff Feature” column.

Everette, Wanda, and Rachel Peery celebrated their same day birthdays on January 21.

The following births were announced: Cody Allen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Randall Mitchell; Zechariah, son of Tim and Kenda McCallister; and Julia Collen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Brian Weeks.

Funeral services were held for Clyde Graves, 78; Nina Horner, 68; Eugene Peters, 90; and for Neva Skelton, 62.

January 30, 2003

The Lewis County School Board was honored with an appreciation dinner as part of School Board Appreciation Week.

Quality Homecare was featured in the Chamber Spotlight column.

Three Lewis County basketball teams defeated Hampshire. The Lady Panthers Junior Varsity won with a score of 29 to 26. Courtney Sheets led the team in scoring with 10 points. The Lady Panthers won with a score of 67 to 56 with Britni Tenison and Delicia Brugmann tying for the top score with 18 points each. The Panthers won with a score of 58 to 44. Luke Curfman was the top scorer with 12 points and 5 rebounds.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Loretto with a score of 60 to 30 in district play. Johnny Mendez led the team in scoring with 13 points and 3 rebounds.

Marjorie Eib won the Grand Championship in her division at the Battle of Mason-Dixon Karate Championship in Louisville, KY.

Funeral services were held for Black Carroll, 82; Matthew Devore; Kimberly Ewing, 29; Timothy Hickerson, 51; Josephine Mangrum, 81; and for Modena Reed, 83.
