February 23, 1961

Statistics were published on each of the members of the LCHS Panthers boys basketball team. Melvin Brackeen was the high scorer for the year with 252 points, hitting 43 percent from the field and 63 percent from the foul line. Jerry Perry was the next high scorer for the year with 214 points, hitting 32 percent of his shots from the field and 26 percent from the free throw line. Pittman Baker ranked third with 209 points, hitting 36 percent from the field and 63 percent from the free throw line.

The following news items were reported on residents serving in the United States Armed Forces: Charley Conder participated with other personnel from the 8th Infantry Division in Exercise Winter Shield II. William Turner was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal for meritorious services rendered in previous commands.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Collinwood with a score of 14 to 6. Jerry Perry was the high scorer for the team with 17 points.


Funeral services were held for Loyd Duff, 50; Richard Ellis, 63; Levi Seiber, 69; and for William Wisdom, 58.

“HUK” and “Heller in Pink Tights,” starring Gina Lolabridgda, were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Strand Theatre and the Saturday movies at the Highlands Drive-In.

February 25, 1971

Herbert Rochelle, Cubmaster of Pack 322, was presented the Long Rifle Award at the Boy Scouts Buffalo River District annual banquet.

Mrs. C. R. Bell was named Chair of National Library Week in Lewis County.


Grimes Flower Shop was accepted into the international group Florists’ Transworld Delivery Association (FTD) which would allow residents to send flowers to any place in North and South America.

The Hohenwald Golf and Recreation Club kicked off a membership drive.

John Edwards was promoted to the rank of Captain in the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

The roadblock and house-to-house canvas scheduled to collect funds for the annual Heart Fund drive was postponed due to weather conditions. These activities were rescheduled for February 28.

Ward Clayton was honored for his birthday with a reception held at his home.

Funeral services were held for C. D. Loveless, II, 25; Ira Peters, 82; and for Homer Spain, 74.

“Bullitt,” starring Steve McQueen, and “Something for Everyone,” starring Angela Landsbury and Michael York, were the weekend movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.


February 26, 1981

A Lewis County man, charged with the death of his brother, was found not guilty by the Circuit Court jury after three hours deliberation.

The Lewis County Jr-High Lady Raiders finished second in the State Invitational Tournament. The tourney was concluded with the Raiders meeting Summertown in the finals, losing 27 to 21.

Members of the LCHS Band participated in the annual senior high school solo and ensemble festival at held at MTSU.

A Lewis County man was charged with armed robbery in connection with the August 14 robbery of Wagster Rexall Drug Store in Mt. Pleasant.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Summertown with a score of 55 to 52 in District Tourney play. Benny Pace was the top scorer for the team with 15 points.

Mr. and Mrs. Bill Seiber announced the birth of their daughter, Tonia Evelyn.

Funeral services were held for Oliver Burns, 72; Patricia Elliot, 45; Ethel Scott, 86; and for Ida Skelton.

“Blood Beach” was the weekend feature at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.

February 21, 1991

Heavy rains and high winds caused extensive damage throughout the county when rain and wind storms began on February 13. Several bridges were washed out, trees fell, and power outages occurred for some residents.

Lewis County Schools closed due to an influenza outbreak. The decision was made as there was about 15 percent absenteeism.

David Adcox began his second year as vice-president of the Southeastern Region of the Petroleum Marketers Association of America.

A local florist, Rosemary Hinson, received a call from Saudi Arabia from Captain Robbie Rawdon who wished to send flowers to his wife, Becky, for Valentine’s Day. Hinson relayed the call through the proper channels to get the order filled and delivered to Newbern, NC.

Danny Henderson was promoted in the U. S. Air Force to the rank of senior airman.

Mary Spurgeon was honored for 35 years of service with Genesco-Laredo/Codewest.

Jason Sharpe enlisted in the U. S. Army.

The following births were announced: Kelsie Janea, daughter of Berry and Kellie Seiber; and Corbin Duane, son of Robbie and Dana Carroll.

Ada Fite was honored for her 87th birthday with a dinner held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Fite.

Funeral services were held for Tommye Bell, 73; Benjamin Hinson, 29; Dorothy Laxton, 59; John Miller, 76; and for Ava Sims, 86.

February 22, 2001

Heavy rains caused an estimated $100,000 worth of road damage throughout Lewis County.

The Lewis County Commission approved plans to renovate the Courthouse to bring the building up to ADA requirements, including the installation of an elevator.

The LCHS Lady Panthers defeated Richland with a score of 70 to 57 in district tourney play. Britni Tenison led the team in scoring with 19 points.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Summertown with a score of 69 to 56. Kyle Clayburn was the top scorer for the team with 28 points.

LCHS senior Crystal Willis was chosen to play in the annual Tennessee Athletic Coaches’ Association All-Star Volleyball Match to be held in Knoxville in July 2001.

Yogie’s Purity Milk & Ice Cream was featured in the Chamber Spotlight column.

Funeral services were held for William Bates, Sr., 91; Freda Cooper, 70; James Davis, 80; May deChameroy, 90; and for Emmett Quillen, 89.
