Serving Hohenwald, Lewis County Tennessee Since 1898
The Lewis County Historical Society met June 6, 2022 at The Farm and were given a very delightful evening with Douglas Stevenson who talked about some of their many activities and programs. Douglas, author of “Out to Change the World” and “The Farm Then and Now”, led the group through a brief history of The Farm, an international hippy community established in 1971 and of the many projects and services happening there now.
This includes the book publishing company with many Native American authors and health subjects, the midwifery program, the solar school, soy dairy ice cream, the food and health store, and the radioactivity detectors manufacturing. The group learned about the outreach to help others, such as in Central American and Kids to the Country for inner city kids.
The members saw the original building at The Farm and nearby building with white metal roofing to reflect heat. They saw Douglas’ garden and the community garden, Also heard about the media center, the eco-training program for alternative building methods, and Swan Conservation Trust, which works to protect biodiversity and has workshops, hikes, and educational programs. There is also a farmer’s market each week.

The Historical Society’s next meeting will be in August for a picnic and talk about a wall constructed by the grandson of an Indian woman who was forced to walk The Trails of Tears and escaped back to her home. Everyone in the community is invited to attend.
