The ninth annual Double- Creek Rifle hunting sponsored by Wounded Warriors in Action Foundation (WWIAF.org) was hosted by Dennis Reynolds and Shelley Cohen. With incredible support from the community, these five heroes had an opportunity to connect with a commonality of being wounded while serving.

One received his first Purple Heart at the age of 17 while wounded during the Vietnam War and then another injury in 2003 occurred during Operation Iraqi Freedom. This Army veteran from Florida was joined by four other Army Purple Heart recipients from WA, FL, MI, and LA for a WWIA deer hunt held right here in Hohenwald.

Their injuries have an enduring impact on their overall health and well-being. Some have had more than 25 surgeries related to their injuries, others continue to be challenged with hearing loss, mobility restraints, and traumatic brain injury. It is the love of the outdoors, sportsmanship, and the need to connect with other Warriors that is critical to the healing process. Whether it is traumatic brain injury, limb/back disability or post- traumatic stress disorder, or survivor's guilt- these events bolster self-confidence while strengthening a bond with nature and others.

Volunteer guides included Jason Hay, Damian Cole, Garrick Couch, and Manny Moreton. Angela Warren, Ron McConnell, Tammy Adkins, and Amy Reynolds provided items for the meals. The use of side-by-side vehicles for the event was provided by Travis Hinson and Michael Moore.

Game Warden Jonas Cothran donated ice and joined the group for lunch on the first day of the hunt. The Highland Corporation not only provided bottled water, but donated funds toward the cost of hunting licenses and travel. Donations toward the cost of food were provided by friends and colleagues from across the country, including a VFW post in Pennsylvania!

This weekend of sportsmanship also offers a setting that encourages these heroes to connect with other Purple Heart recipients who understand the impact of being a wounded warrior.
