January 01, 1953

January 03, 1963

J.H. Warf, superintendent of Lewis County Schools for 13 years, was sworn in as State Commissioner of Education on December 31, 1962. Mr. Warf succeeded Joe Morgan, who resigned to become president of Austin Peay State College.

Josephine Warf, wife of J.H. Warf, was unanimously elected by 22 county magistrates to succeed her husband as Lewis County School Superintendent. Arthur Turnbow was also a candidate for the post. Mrs. Warf, who held a public health nursing degree, previously held the position as county superintendent from 1940 to 1950. From 1950 to 1963, she served as executive secretary to Mr. Warf during his position as superintendent.

Hershel Spears won first place in the Home Lighting Contest sponsored by MLEC. Second place went to Hassell Spears, and third place went to Robin “Boob” Williams.

MLEC reported that the average cost per kilowatt-hour used during 1962 was 1.06 cents, the lowest average cost every recorded in one year by the local power system. National average costs for residential users were 2.41 cents per kilowatt-hour.

The LCHS Panthers received a trophy for being the top team in the Tennessee Valley Conference. Accepting the trophy were local members of the All-TVC team: Cecil Baker, Keith Rogers, G.W. Stephens, and Chuck Stowe.

Mr. and Mrs. Billy Keaton announced the birth of their daughter, Beth.

Funeral services were held for Lena Schwendimann, 80.

“Two Weeks in Another Town,” starring Edward G. Robinson and Kirk Douglas, and “Blue Denim,” starring Brandon de Wilde and Carol Linley, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In.

January 04, 1973

Walter Mayer, Park Ranger at Meriwether Lewis Park, reported that 1972 was a year of rain as the total rain for the year was 64.65, almost 10 inches above the long term average of 54.78 inches.

Donald Krstich graduated from pilot training at Webb Air Force Base, TX.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Waynesboro with a score of 73 to 46. Randy Carroll was the top scorer with 18 points.

Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Grimes announced the birth of their son, Jason Matthew.

Funeral services were held for Kyle Barber, 54; Jay Daniel, 58; Serena Stephens, 80; and for Byron Webb, 90.

“Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave,” starring Anthony Steffen and Marina Malfatti, and “The Organization,” starring Sidney Poitier, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In.

In area news: the main headline in the Herald this week was “Two Crash Victims Flew $500,000 Ransom to Tennessee.” Two pilots who were killed on takeoff near Detroit Metropolitan Airport were the same ones who flew a $500,000 ransom to Tennessee in the hijacking of a Southern Airways DC9 jetliner in November 1972.

January 06, 1983

Lewis County Sheriff Department, working with the TBI and District Attorney, conducted raids New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. A raid of a private club on Hwy 48, south of town, resulted in the confiscation of two pistols, three rifles, 93 pints of whiskey and several fifths of assorted liquors. A raid on Buffalo Road, resulted in the confiscation of 95 bottles of assorted whiskey and a pistol. Charges were placed for the illegal sale and storage of intoxicating liquors.

The Hohenwald State Area Vocational-Technical School announced an open house to be held on January 13.

An organizational meeting to form a Kiwanis Club in Hohenwald was planned for January 10 at the Golden Saddle Restaurant.

The LCHS Lady Panthers defeated Hampshire. Karen Coubert led the team in scoring with 16 points and 9 rebounds.

The Panthers defeated Hampshire with a score of 70 to 57. Steve Coubert was the top scorer for the team with 17 points.

The following births were announced: Mark Anthony II, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark McCann; and Britney Ann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roger Sealey. McCann had the distinction of being the first baby born in Lewis County during 1982.

Mr. and Mrs. O.D. McClearen celebrated their 70th anniversary.

Funeral services were held for Osby Hinson, 79; and for Maxie Pigg, 69.

“An Officer and a Gentleman,” starring Richard Gere and Deborah Winger, was the weekend movie showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theatre.

In area news: A Henry County resident who pled guilty to second degree murder in a July 1973 death of a Hohenwald man was arrested on a charge of bank robbery in connection with a New Year’s Eve robbery of the Bank of Bolivar branch office in Hornby on Hwy 64.

January 7, 1993

County Executive Terry Bunch spoke to the Hohenwald City Council regarding the economic advantage of operating a regional landfill as opposed to one operated by a single county or city.

Sam Kidd was featured in the Teacher Feature column.

The following births were announced: Shayla Danielle, daughter of Bobby and Kim Street; and Bethany Brooke, daughter of Ricky and Priscilla Runions.

Layne Smith was honored for her birthday with a celebration hosted by members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Women at the fellowship hall.

Christy Ricketts and Harville Griner were honored for their birthdays with a surprise dinner hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Tim Webb.

Herman and Hester Gandy celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary with a celebration at Trinity Assembly of God. The couple was presented a plaque in honor of their anniversary.

The 1992 weather report for Lewis County, compiled by Roy Hargrave, listed 69.4 inches of rain was received. The lowest temperature in December 1992 was 16 degrees, and the highest temperature was 53 degrees. The yearly low for 1992 was four degrees recorded on January 16th and the high of 94 was recorded on three different days in 1992, July 10 and 13, and August 9.

Funeral services were held for Walter Eayre, 75; Rebecca Garrett, 82; and for Beatrice Keeton, 46.

January 02, 2003

Law enforcement and volunteers found two missing children after they were reported missing on Little Swan Creek Road. After an almost 3.5-hour search, the children were located 2.5 miles north of their home. Both children were reported cold and hungry, but were otherwise doing fine.

Lewis County Confederate veteran Eli Luther Miller was remembered and honored with the placing of a veteran marker on his grave, followed by a memorial service conducted by the Sam R. Watkins Camp 29, Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Joyce Beasley won a spot in the Happiness Magazine for a story about her mother and father’s early years. The story would be published in the January 11-17 edition.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Elliston Baptist Academy with a score of 77 to 46 at the BGA Wildcat Club 1st Annual Christmas Classic. Jeff Sparkman was the leading scorer for the team with 20 points, 11 rebounds, and 1 block shot.

Jeremy and Hannah Sendra announced the birth of their daughter, Ayslyn Jo.

Funeral services were held for Lila Beard, 40; Bonnie Fey, 89; Lillian Fite, 93; Gerald Malone, 50; Glen Potts, 73; Arthur Qualls, Sr., 63; Kenneth Seiber, 78; Ophelia Scott, 88; Ethel Warden, 90; and for E. H. Wright, 92.
