On February 9, 2023, he and his wife, Darlene, celebrated 50 years of marriage.

Johnsy is survived by his wife, Darlene Hickerson Johns; son, Devin (Jennifer) Johns; grandchildren, Addison Johns, Aiden Johns, and Drake Johns; "brother", Thomas "Tooley" Johns; "Bonus Mother", Madelyn Tharp; and "sister", Jill Tharp Selby; as well as his best friends and caretakers, Don Pollock and Lynn Ammons, and Vickie Riggan, along with a large host of other family and friends.
