Panthers Tennis versus Zion

The LCHS boys’ and girls’ tennis teams hosted the Zion Christian Academy Lady Eagles and Eagles on Thursday, March 30th.

In girls’ singles Ruth Jennings took the court as the number one seed for Lewis County. The number one seed from Zion Christian broke service early and carried momentum to an 8-4 win. Brooke Mason played as the number two seed and jumped out in front in the opening points of the match and went on to win the match 8-2. The number three seed for the Lady Panthers on Thursday was Trinly Greene. Green fell behind in the opening points and went on to drop the match by an 8-2 score. Mary Halfacre was the number four seed for Lewis County and trailed the Zion Christian number four through the match, ultimately losing the match 8-3. Persia Snow played in the five seed match for the Lady Panthers and dropped points early and lost the match 8-2.

In doubles play Lewis County paired Ruth Jennings and Brooke Mason in the first doubles match on the girls’ side to face the top pair from Zion Christian. In a back and forth matchup, the pairing from Zion Christian broke service first and took a slim lead, holding it for an 8-6 win. In the second doubles match the duo of Trinly Greene and Mary Halfacre jumped out in front of their Zion opponents in the opening points of the match and cruised to an 8-1 win.

The Lady Panthers went 1-4 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles.

Bryson Clayburn, Lewis County’s number one seed, seized control of the matchup with Zion’s number one midway through the match. Clayburn would rally to the end taking an 8-4 win. The Panthers had Ethan Powers as the number two seed in the matchup with Zion. Like Clayburn, Powers was able to take over his match and sealed the win 8-2. Julian Jones took the court as the number three seed for Lewis County and had little difficulty dispatching his opponent from Zion as he cruised to an 8-2 win. In the matchup of number four seeds Jeremiah Sparks of Lewis County fell behind early and was unable to break serve as he dropped an 8-4 tilt. Gavin Carroll was Lewis County’s number five seed on the afternoon and found himself locked in a tight match. Carroll broke service late and grabbed the lead, taking the win 8-6. The final boys’ match was Lewis County’s six seed Xavier Baggett, and Baggett lost serve in the early points and was unable to gain ground as he dropped the match 8-0.

In boys’ doubles Bryson Clayburn and Ethan Powers match with the first Zion pairing was a display of service points on both sides of the net. The Zion pair was the first to flinch as Clayburn and Powers broke service and held on for the 8-6 win. Julian Jones and Gavin Carroll played the second boys’ doubles match and pulled out in front midway through the match and carried the lead to an 8-5 victory.

The Panthers went 4-2 in singles play and 2-0 in doubles.
