Verlin Rose Horton George

November 13, 1930 — April 25, 2023

Verlin Rose Horton George was born November 13, 1930 in Michie, Tennessee, the daughter of the late Denton R. and Velma Hardin Horton.

She was united in marriage to Malcom F. George on July 26, 1951. Malcom preceded her in death on December 15, 2022, following 71 years of marriage.

Verlin was a 1950 graduate of Selmer High School and also enrolled in extension courses offered through Freed-Hardeman College in Henderson. She served three years in the mission field of Beirut, Lebanon, where she taught the English language. Verlin was formerly a member of the Home Demonstration Club in various communities where she and her husband lived and taught Bible classes in the churches of Christ where Malcom preached. She was a preacher’s wife first and foremost, serving as a living example of biblical hospitality. She and Malcom loved to visit; many a meal was shared with others in their home, and they always welcomed an invitation to dine in the homes of church members and friends. When Verlin was no longer able to travel for visits, she would call people every day to check on them and talk. Verlin was a faithful member of the Lomax church of Christ in Hohenwald.

Verlin departed this life on April 25, 2023 in Hohenwald, at the age of 92 years, 5 months, 12 days. She is survived by a daughter, Rose (George) Spears and husband Jeff of Hohenwald; a son, David George and wife Sherry of Franklin; six grandchildren, Jason George and wife Bridgett of Spring Hill, Justin George and wife Reagan of Spring Hill, Bree Barry and husband Cory of Panama City Beach, Florida, Brandice Searcy and husband Trent of Spring Hill, Brock Spears and wife Kayla of Hohenwald, and Breena Carroll and husband Derick of Hohenwald; eight great-grandchildren, Drucilla, Jaxon, Jameson, Beckett, Hudson, Rawlin, Orson, and Ryman; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Horton of Town Creek, Alabama; two nieces, Amanda and Melinda; a nephew, Timothy; and many extended family and friends. In addition to her husband and parents, Verlin was preceded in death by a brother, Leon Horton.

Shackelford Funeral Directors is honored to serve the George family.
