Commissioners Approve Funding for Major Public Safety Project

Last month, Lewis County Commissioners unanimously approved spending $686,715 in federal ARPA grant money to provide major upgrades to Lewis County’s Emergency Radio System.

The County has been working with the local Emergency Management Agency and First Responders on this project for over two years, in order to enhance the overall efficiency and effectiveness of emergency response in our community.

The project includes installing new technology at the two existing radio towers, as well as adding a third tower along Paul Spears Road, which will significantly improve radio coverage and signal strength to the eastern half of Lewis County. All three towers will also be upgraded to a simulcast broadcasting system.

“During a crisis, having a good communication system is crucial for the safety and well-being of both our first responders and the public,” stated Lewis County EMA Director, Danny Atkinson, who has led the way to make these upgrades possible.

The upgraded radio system will also benefit our community by providing better communication among different agencies. For instance, this new system will support Dispatchers and the EMA office, the Sheriff’s Department, Fire Department, City Police Department, and School Bus Drivers. It will also have the capabilities to be used by the County Highway Department.

“This upgrade will allow first responders to communicate much better, ensuring a swift and coordinated response to any emergency situation,” stated Lewis County Mayor Jonah Keltner. “I appreciate Mr. Atkinson for all of his hard work pulling this project together, as well as our Commissioners for providing funding for these important upgrades.”
