October 1, 1953

Both the Hohenwald Barber Shop and the Hohenwald Bank and Trust were undergoing remodeling.

Gunner’s Mate 3rd Class John Brewer was serving aboard the USS Kenneth D. Bailey.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Waynesboro with a score of 49 to 0.

Mr. and Mrs. John P. Baker celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a reception at their home on Swan Road.

“The Return of Frank James,” starring Henry Fonda, and “Apache Country,” starring Gene Autry, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Strand Theatre.

Advertised specials this week at U-Tote-Em Super Market included a half-gallon of milk for $0.41, fresh eggs at the price of $0.59 a dozen, and beef roast for $0.39 a pound.

October 3, 1963

Mayor W. C. Keaton signed a proclamation declaring the week of October 6 as “National Employ the Handicapped Week.”


Two men were hospitalized as a result of a brawl at Hattie’s Inn at Ridgetop. One man was stabbed four times, while the other was shot three times with a .22 revolver during the argument.

A Cub Scout round-up was held on October 1 for the purpose of organizing new dens and reactivating old ones.

Arelus Dye was the winner of the 42 half dollars given by Kittrell Motor Company during their 42nd anniversary celebration.

Airman Bobby Ogg was reassigned to Amarillo Air Force Base following his graduation from basic training.

Marine Corporal William White reported to Beaufort, SC for duty with Headquarters and Maintenance Squadron 31.

Big Brothers Grocery advertised that they were holding a final close out sale. One silver dollar would be given away with each $5.00 purchase, excluding tobacco.


“All That Heaven Allows,” starring Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson, and “Showdown,” starring Audie Murphy and Kathleen Crowley, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.

October 4, 1973

Bonds, in the amount of $854,628, were issued to make possible the construction of a manufacturing plant in Hohenwald for use by Kay Windsor.

The Annual Punt, Pass, and Kick Contest was held. Fifty contestants, aged 8 through 13 participated. First place winners were Cody Anderson, age 8; Jeff Hinson, age 9; Greg Hankins, age 10; Mark Sisco, age 11; Robert Cogdill, age 12; and Jeff Perry, age 13.

Richard Griffin completed Air Force basic training ant was assigned to Lowry Air Force Base, CO.


The New Switzerland Figure Spa advertised that they would hold a grand opening on October 15.

The Lewis Brothers Circus advertised that they would set up circus grounds by the H.I.S. plant on October 05. The circus was sponsored by the Lions Club.

The LCHS Panthers won their first game of the season, defeating Waynesboro with a score of 18 to 6. Steve Ellis carried the ball 17 times for a gain of 117 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Robert Ray caught a 9.75-pound largemouth bass while fishing at Laurel Hill Lake.

Mr. and Mrs. Farry Warren celebrated their 60th anniversary with a reception held at the Warren Community Center in Linden.

Funeral services were held for Edna Clayton, 70; Andrea Greeson, infant; Callie Hinson, 73; Frances Mayberry, 88; Barbara Stephens, 23; and for Beatrice Whitten, 76.

“Paper Moon,” starring Ryan O’Neal was the Friday through Monday movie shown at the Highlands Drive-In. Admission to the film was $1.50.

October 6, 1983

The husband of a Lewis County murder victim found dead in Lawrence County was sought for questioning.

Draw poker machines were picked up at six locations in Lewis County after TBI agents played the machines and were paid off by the operators of the business establishments.

Mary Webb was presented an award for 37 years of service from Genesco plant manager Randy Johnson.

Chad Cothran, Jeff Davis, and Wendell Cotham were named LCHS Players of the Week.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Waynesboro with a score of 22 to 20. Wendell Cotham led the team with 21 tackles. Paul Rawdon carried the ball 18 times for 57 yards.

Funeral services were held for Mary Sherman, 48; Ocia Staggs, 88; and for Mary Waggoner, 71.

“Gettin’ It On” and “Spring Fever” were the weekend movies showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theatre.

October 7, 1993

Several citizens of Williamson, Hickman, Perry, and Lewis Counties picketed at the Lewis County Court House during the Grand Jury meeting. Signs carried in the protest stated that the District Attorney and Assistant District Attorney were “unfair.”

For the second time in two weeks, local law enforcement was called to search for residents of American Counseling Systems who escaped from the facility beside Lewis Community Hospital.

LCHS Panthers defeated Hardin County with a score of 20 to 14. Randal Hankins led in rushing with 18 carries for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Wylie Carroll qualified as a plane captain.

Navy Airman Richie Carroll received the Meritorious Unit Commendation, along with his shipmates aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt.

A feature ran on David O’Dell who was stationed in Alaska with the Air Force.

Jay Pollock and Pam McCann were honored with a birthday supper held by their mother, Faye Holt, and sister, Toni Maze.

Funeral services were held for Clyde Hensley, 90; William Inman, 88; and for James Webb, 79.

October 2, 2003

Freedom Holy Temple was sponsoring a lawnmower race to raise funds for children at Christmas.

Mayor Bob Burklow and the Hohenwald City Council were featured in the “A Closer Look…” column.

U. S. Representative Lincoln Davis announced that Lewis County was approved for inclusion in the Appalachian Regional Commission.

Mike Webb performed on the Grand Ole Opery during a celebration of Roy Acuff’s life when the United States Postal Service released the new Roy Acuff Stamp.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Hickman County with a score of 27 to 0. Zack Chapin led the defense with 11 tackles. Marcus Booker was the leading rusher with 134 yards on 25 carries.

Malea Hinson was featured as the LCMS “Student of the Week.”

Gene Medford placed first in the slow race at the State Finals Motorcycle Rodeo at Crazy Horse Canoe Rental.

Danielle Holt was selected as the 2003 Columbia Academy Homecoming Queen.

The Hohenwald Donkey, Miniature Horse and Mule Show was held at Memorial Park.

Van Schwendimann won the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League’s Music City Super Division Tournament, catching 10 bass weighing over 25 pounds on Old Hickory Lake.

Derek and Christy Bullion announced the birth of their son, Blake Austin.

Devin Johns was honored for his 30th birthday with a surprise lunch at Rio Colorado.

Funeral services were held for Bobbye McKee, 75; and for Hessie Ray, 96.
