October 15, 1953

A total of ten bids were received and opened by the County and City Public Building Committee. Bids were accepted for the building of the industrial building to be occupied by Wynn Enterprises.

Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Sharp celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Earl Baker, Audie Davis, Buddy Hinson, and Mattie Sharp won the Fishing Contest held by Genesco.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Dickson with a score of 33 to 6.

Private Charles Hinson was assigned to the 57th Infantry Division at Camp Polk, LA.

Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Sharp celebrated their 50th anniversary.

Mr. and Mrs. Naymond Graves announced the birth of their son, James Andrew.

Funeral services were held for John Himes, 76; Grace Huddleston, 66; and for Annie Wipf, 69.

“Mission Over Korea,” starring John Hodiak and John Derek, and “Thunderhoof,” starring Robert Preston, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Strand Theatre.


October 17, 1963

An engineer from Nashville and a representative of a bonding company met with the Mayor and City Council to discuss estimates for the proposed new sewer system. The group voted to have the engineering of the system completed; the approximate cost, of which, would be $440,000.

Dawn Elrod, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Parker Elrod of Centerville, was selected as Miss MLEC of 1963 at the annual MLEC district meeting.

David Barber won the Club Championship at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club.

Clay Beatty caught an 81-pound yellow catfish while fisting the Buffalo River.


Funeral services were held for James Carroll, 72; Richard Greengrass, 2; and for Howard Sisco.

“The Burning Hills,” starring Natalie Wood and Tab Hunter, and “Play It Cool,” starring Bobby Vee, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.

October 18, 1973

The Supreme Court dismissed an appeal by four members of the Farm who claimed their conviction on charges of growing marijuana violated their constitutional right of religious freedom.

Lewis County Government closed an agreement with Extendicare Corporation for the purchase of 1.55 acres of land on the north side of the Lewis County Hospital Property to construct a medical facility.

The Southside Restaurant was heavily damaged by a late-night fire on October 13.


The Lewis County Jaycees announced that they would hold a Halloween candy sale, the proceeds of which, would be used to present the 4th annual Christmas Parade sponsored by the the group.

The following births were announced: James Andrew, son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Holt; Jamie Lee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ricky Brown; and Solomon Enos, son of Mr. and Mrs. Enos Mast.

Mr. and Mrs. James Sharp celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reception held at the Hohenwald Bank community room.

Funeral services were held for Charles Bennett, 42; Ethel Floyd, 74; Sadie Gresham; and for Oscar Westbrook, 71.

“Shotgun Wedding” and “Fly Me” were the Friday and Saturday movies shown at the Highlands Drive-In. Admission to the film was $1.50.

October 20, 1983

Lewis County and the City of Hohenwald purchased the Jaws of Life equipment. A demonstration and instruction was given on the lawn of the Lewis County Court House.

Lewis County was among 77 Tennessee counties approved for federal emergency disaster loan assistance due to crop losses caused by severe temperatures during the summer of 1983.

Bill Bates, Arelus Dye, Tim Dye and Gary Gordon won the four-man Scramble Tournament held at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club.

Mrs. Etha Sisco was honored on her birthday with a dinner held at the home of her son, Earl.

Chessor Pace retired from Petrolane Arrow Gas in Columbia and was honored with a dinner.

The following births were announced: Mark Allen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Baxter; Joshua Allen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Dye; Cassie Dawn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Entrekin; Robert Lee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Herrin; Brandy Brooke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Johnson; Alex Bryan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bryan Lane; and Jonathan Brett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Van Ward.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Brentwood with a score of 25 to 16. Jeff Davis led the team in tackles with 15. Wendell Cotham was the receiver for four of the completed passes for a total yardage of 57.

Jeff Gandy and Paul Rawdon were named as LCHS Players of the Week.

Funeral services were held for Houston Rochelle, 81; and for Mattie Sharp, 91.

“Mr. Mom,” starring Michael Keaton and Teri Garr, were the weekend movies showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theatre.

October 21, 1993

The Lewis County Commission voted for the issuance of $70,000 in three-year capital outlay notes. $60,000 of this amount would be used to purchase land and build a class 4 demolition landfill adjacent to the city landfill. The other $10,000 would be used to purchase computer equipment for basic county business.

Frances Long retired from Laredo Code West after 31.5 years of service.

Jeff Skelton was named wildlife officer in Lewis County for the TWRA.

Scott Sisco won the high points championship in power boat racing at Winchester.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Hickman County with a score of 18 to 9. Wesley Duncan completed four of five passes for 82 yards with two touchdowns.

Jeremy Clayton enlisted in the U.S. Army.

Walter and Fran Mears announced the birth of their daughter, Katlin Sherie.

Mrs. G. B. Pevehouse celebrated her 84th birthday with a party at the Lewis County Manor.

Edward and Clara Tenison celebrated their 50th anniversary with a reception at the Memorial Park Community Building.

Funeral services were held for Hobert Carroll, 74; and for Arthur Whitehead, 70.

October 16, 2003

The main headline for the week was “Panthers Control Their Own Destiny: Victory Over Cheatham County has them in Drivers Seat.” LCHS defeated Cheatham County with a score of 14 to 7. Zack Chapin led the defense with 13 tackles.

Denise Allen and Lewis County Even Start was featured in the “A Closer Look…” column.

The City Parking Lot was closed for the night after an assault resulted in a male being sent to Maury Regional for treatment.

Jessica Fedor was featured in the LCMS “Student of the Week” column.

Karren Morris was honored for 15 years’ continuous service with Eaton Global Hose.

The following births were announced: Brodie Gaven and Brinley Grace, twins of Rod and Misty Carter; and Nicholas Blake, son of Lawrence Olsen and Stevie Pucino.

Funeral services were held for Emily Connelly, 2; Jessie George, 85; Eva Grover, 89; Jessie Jackson, 86; Ruth Keaton, 94; and for Peter Mertes, 79.
