October 23, 1953

The Herald reported that Lewis County was feeling the “full extent” of a record breaking heat wave and drought.

The County and City building committee met on October 19 for further consideration of the letting of a contract for the construction of the industrial building to be leased by Breezy Wynn. Joseph Hart of Nashville was chosen as architect.

Billy Griner and Carl Talley were inducted into the U.S. Army.

Funeral services were held for Clara Doyle, 55; James Pollock, 79; Winnie Staggs, 16; Caleb Turnbow, 65.

“Flame of Calcutta,” starring Denise Darcel and Patric Knowles, and “Ghost of Crossbones,” starring Robert Preston, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Strand Theatre.

The Strand advertised that they would be offering a 10:30 p.m. late night showing on Saturday night of the “Beast from 20,000 Fathoms,” starring Paul Christian and Cecil Kelloway.


October 24, 1963

An Auxiliary group of volunteers for Lewis County Hospital was being organized.

The LCHS Band received a rating of B (excellent) at the Middle TN School Band and Orchestra Association contest held in Columbia.

Youth at the Hohenwald Methodist Church announced that they would be Trick or Treating for UNICEF on Halloween night.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Savannah with a score of 33 to 6.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Willie Ann Moore, 79; Ollie Murphy, 69.

“The Main Attraction,” starring Pat Boone, and “Seven Seas to Calais,” starring Rod Taylor and Keith Mitchell, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.


October 25, 1973

The Bible Quiz team of the First United Pentecostal Church won the annual National Bible Quiz Tournament held in Salt Lake City, UT. Members of the team were: Johnny Atkins, Bobby Barber, Jr., Eddie Duncan, Joey Hensley, and Ricky Hensley.

Jerry Yokely was elected executive vice-president and a director of the Candler Co., based in Atlanta, GA.

Total attendance at the two-day County Fair and Arts Festival held at Meriwether Lewis Park was 9,982, according to park officials.

The following births were announced: Melissa Ann, daughter Mr. and Mrs. Bob Anderso; Carla Christine, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerry Bennett; Kathleen Marie, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Lester; and Traci Desharmon, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Travis McGee.


Funeral services were held for Randy Hinson, 18; Coy Lancaster, 76; Savannah Skelton, 95; Billie Staggs, 76; Cletus Thomason, 54; and for Clara Yates, 53.

Women’s Levi jeans were on sale at Puckett & Maynord for $3.98 a pair; men’s long sleeve shirts were on sale at the price of two shirts for $5.

“The Godchildren,” starring Elliott Lindsey and Sandy Carey, and “The Revengers,” starring William Holden and Ernest Borgnine, were the Friday and Saturday movies shown at the Highlands Drive-In.

October 27, 1983

Jane Kinney won the Five Rivers Arts and Crafts Association’s $300 Purchase Award for her wood sculpture of a nuthatch.

Jeremy James won the 15 month to 3-year age bracket in the photogenic contest held at the Fall Festival Beauty Contest.

Grace Spurgeon retired from H.I.S. after 28 years’ service. She was presented a gold watch by Plant Manager Terry Colley.

The following births were announced: Bradley Scott, son of Mr. and Mrs. Scott Breeding; and Tiffany Dawn, daughter of Ricky and Charlotte Battles.

Funeral services were held for Grady Ammons, 70; Ernest Culp, 69; Alvis Hinson, 52; and for Oneida Hinson, 63.

“Final Terror,” starring John Friedrich, and “One Dark Night,” starring Meg Tilly and Melissa Newman, were the weekend movies showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theatre.

October 28, 1993

Preparations began for additions at LCES and LCHS. The $3.1 million construction project would relieve crowded conditions in all schools of the county and allow for a lower teacher to pupil ratio.

The Natchez Trace Corridor Association received the Governor’s Gold Star Award for achievement in tourism development.

Boston Industrial Products received the Tennessee Association of Business’s Air Quality Award. The award was given in recognition for the company’s environmental achievements.

Tony Barber hit a hole-in-one at the par four ninth hole at the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club.

LCHS Panthers defeated Mt. Pleasant with a score of 22 to 21.

Sarah Starbuck was honored with a surprise birthday party given by the Older Adult Fellowship of Hohenwald United Methodist Church.

Aileen Warf was honored with a birthday party given by the Older Adult Fellowship of Hohenwald United Methodist Church.

The Lewis County Manor held a birthday party to honor the following residents who celebrated birthdays in October: Mattie Hardin, Bessie Landers, Odel Pevahouse, Ruth Rictor, Jack Roberts, Francis Scarsella, and Norma Wilson.

Funeral services were held for James Carroll, 53; Harold Crowder, 58; Pauline Luker, 84; and for Hughie Patton, 79.
