October 29, 1953

The Herald urged residents to go to the polls on November 3rd and vote on eight proposed amendments to the state constitution.

C. R. Bell, owner of Western Auto, announced that parents could purchase “a real letter from Santa Claus” that would be postmarked at Santa’s home in Santa Claus, Indiana. Parents would address the letters at the store and Mr. Bell would send them to Indiana where they would be postmarked and mailed to the child.

TWRA released 54 adult Bob White quail in Lewis County on

October 27.

Airman William Bell was completing basic training at Lackland Air Force base.

LCHS Panthers defeated Hickman County with a score of 6 to 0.

General rainfall across Tennessee ended a record-breaking drought, with Middle Tennessee receiving ¼ inch.

Dr. Pepper advertised a special weekend offer at local stores where the new 12-bottle carton could be purchased for the price a 6-bottle carton plus deposits.

Advertised specials at U-Tote-Em included two large cans of Pet milk for $0.27, cabbage priced at $0.07 a pound, onions priced at $0.05 a pound, and slab bacon priced at $0.59.

“The Last Posse,” starring Broderick Crawford and John Derek, and “Smokey Canyon,” starring Robert Preston, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Strand Theatre.

November 1, 1973

The Tennessee County Services Association announced that property taxes levied by Lewis County for 1973 were considerably lower than similar levies in most Tennessee counties.

Local and state law enforcement were investigating a body of a Lewis County resident that was found murdered near the south end of the Buffalo River bridge.

Airman Terry Frazier was assigned to Sheppard Air Force Base following his graduation from basic training.

The Lewis County Junior High Civic Bowl was scheduled for November 8. LCES would play Cornersville Elementary.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Adamsville with a score of 36 to 8. Steve Ellis carried the ball 119 yards in 15 carries.

Mr. and Mrs. Gene Keeton announced the birth of their son, Daryl Ray.

Funeral services were held for Patricia Baggett, 20; Danny Clark, 24; Oren Mitchell, 65; and for George Rose, 71.

I. L. Bunch advertised that he had sold his interest in Hohenwald Tire Company to Terry Bunch.

“Three Dimensions of Greta,” a 3D movie starring Tristen Rogers, and “A Separate Peace,” starring Richard Parker, were the Friday and Saturday movies shown at the Highlands Drive-In.

November 3, 1983

Andrea Loveless was chosen to reign as the 1983 Civic Bowl Queen.

LCHS Band placed 5th in at the State Contest held in Mt. Juliet.

Lewis County Bank advertised that they were now authorized to issue Mastercard and Visa credit cards.

The Lewis County Jaycees and Jaycettes held their annual Halloween costume contest. First place winners in three divisions, ages 4-6, 7-10, and 11-14, are as follows: Alaina Carroll, Melissa Reeves, and Jason Leighton.

Carolyn Braun was the first female member veteran to join the V.F.W. in Lewis County.

Rachel Tiller placed 2nd in free sparking and 3rd in forms participating in the mini Pee Wee division of the 1983 Shinis Southern USA Open Karate Championship held in Nashville.

Linda Boyle was honored on her birthday with a dinner held by Mr. and Mrs. Carlton Edwards.

“Summer Heat” and “Beach Girl” were the weekend movies showing at the Highlands Drive-in Theatre.

November 4, 1993

A federal regulation ruling required that the Hohenwald City Council pass a 25 percent rate increase for natural gas used by residential, commercial, and industrial users.

Two persons died and one was hospitalized following a two-vehicle hit-and-run that occurred on West Main Street.

The LCHS Band was one of 20 bands selected to compete in the Tennessee Division II State Band Championship in Nashville.

Three residents of American Counseling Systems escaped the facility. The escape had not been reported to the police, but the police were called when a resident of High Forest Apartments noticed the juveniles jumping a fence.

LCHS Panthers defeated Stewart County with a score of 35 to 0. Damien Clayton led in tackles with 5. Randal Hankins led in rushing with 27 carries for 107 yards and three touchdowns.

Kevin Vaughn of Nunnelly was the winner of a bicycle given away by McDonald’s of Hohenwald.

Denise Blackwood was featured in the weekly “Teacher Feature” column.

Nancy Skelton earned a first degree black belt in Karate.

David Crowell enlisted in the U.S. Army.

Keith Lawson toured Japan and attended technical meetings in various cities.

Hazel Hodges, a resident of Georgia, volunteered at the elementary and middle school while visiting her daughter in Hohenwald.

Funeral services were held for Bluford Conner, 91; Roy Culp, 72; Eva Elkins, 53; Priscilla Runions, 21; and for Gary Tripp, 24.

October 23, 2003

A front page editorial ran about the announced closure of the Eaton plant in Hohenwald.

Barbara Hinson and the office staff of LCES were featured in the “A Closer Look…” column.

The LCHS Panthers claimed the Region 5-AA Title with a 34 to 18 win over Richland. David Sharp led offense with 185 yards on 14 carries. Zack Chapin led the defense with 16 tackles and one sack.

Jed Cooke graduated from Army basic training at Fort Knox, KY.

Jared and Jessika Leigh announced the birth of their son, Zander Kole.

Funeral services were held for Clara Baggett, 89; Peggy Flippo, 66; Maggie Rosson, 84; and for Kenneth Strickland, 66.
