December 10, 1953

The main headline for the week was “Santa to Usher in Christmas Season In Parade Here Sat.” Hohenwald’s first Christmas parade and concert would be held on Saturday, December 13. The festivities would begin at 12:30 p.m. when Santa Claus would arrive accompanied by the LCHS Band. The band would perform a free concert at the Community Christmas Tree followed by caroling. Santa would remain at the tree all afternoon to pass out candy and fruit to children. A prize drawing would be held at 4 p.m.

R. K. Roney, Jr. and Mayor W. C. Keaton were appointed organizing chairmen for the Lewis County Citizens for TVA. The goal of this campaign, which was also being organized in other counties, was to speak out against the movement to eliminate the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Billy Grover was named to the Tennessean All Mid-State Football Team.

W. F. Poore was elected worshipful master for the Hohenwald F&AM Lodge 607.

Dorothy Tuttle was elected worthy matron for the Hohenwald Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Hay Long High with a score of 65 to 33 defeated Collinwood with a score of 59 to 37.

The LCHS girls basketball team defeated Collinwood with a score of 29 to 18.

Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Ramay announced the birth of their son, John Anderson.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. T. T. Carter.

“Street Bandits,” starring Robert Clarke and Penny Edwards, and “The Old West,” starring Gene Autry were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Strand Theatre.

December 12, 1963

The Sabin oral vaccination held in Lewis County was termed successful with 3,854 residents being inoculated with the polio vaccine.

A color guard from Columbia Military Academy led the annual Christmas parade.

The Natchez Vocational Association was formed by vocational teachers from Lewis, Hickman, Lawrence, Perry, and Wayne Counties.

Harry Hooper was named chair for the Lewis County Jaycees sponsored March of Dimes campaign in Lewis County.

American Legion Post 127 received a certificate of award for their exceptional and outstanding achievement in their annual Child Welfare Program.

The annual Home lighting contest would be judged on December 20.

A. O. Ramay was elected worshipful master of the Hohenwald Masonic Lodge 607.

Mrs. E. H. Wright was elected president of the Hospital Auxiliary.

Sammy Baker participated in field training maneuvers with Army 7th Infantry Division in Korea.

Charles Staggs left for a tour of duty with the Army in Seoul, Korea.

A group of whittlers, consisting of Rufus Akers, Shields Bundrant, Harrison Gray, Joel Kelley, Dusty McClain, and John Williams, met in front of Joel Kelley’s Used Car office. The newspaper reported “From what we can learn, from observing, they brag about what a good knife they have, show how good it will whittle, just trying to get up a knife trade with someone in the crowd.”

Funeral services were held for Elizabeth Barber, 77; Mrs. N. W. Black, 83; Thomas Braly Jr., 50; William Roden, 63; Allen Walker, 62.

“Don’t Give Up the Ship,” starring Jerry Lewis, and “Maniac,” starring Kerwin Mathews and Nadia Gray were the Friday and Saturday double feature at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.

December 13, 1973

Charles Tidwell was selected to serve as minister of Lomax Church of Christ.

Forty housing units under construction for the Hohenwald Housing Authority were expected to be completed by March 1974.

Two Lewis County men were shot and a third was charged as a result of a disturbance at the Ponderosa Club in Maury County.

Steve Ellis and Anthony Turner were named to the Southern Tennessee Conference All-Star Team.

James Carroll graduated from a medical laboratory specialist course at Shepard Air Force Base, TX.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Collinwood with a score of 74 to 59. Randy Carroll led the team in scoring with 28 points and 9 rebounds.

The LCHS Pantherettes defeated Collinwood with a score of 54 to 45. Susie Davis was the top scorer for the team with 30 points.

Mr. Waymer Vaughn was honored for his 81st birthday with a celebration held at his home.

“The Friends of Eddie Coyle,” starring Robert Mitchum and Peter Boyle, and “Ace Eli and Rodger of the Skies,” starring Cliff Robertson and Pamela Franklin.

December 15, 1983

Three fifth grade classes at LCES raised funds to help repair the Statute of Liberty after learning of this need from their Weekly Reader. A total of $20 was raised.

Griner Shoprite was burglarized with approximately $50 being taking from the cash register. Entrance was gained by braking the bottom portion of the front door and crawling into the store.

Cumberland Valley Girl Scout Troop 003 adopted grandparents at the Lewis County Manor as part of a new program, Project AGE, created by Troop 003 and the South Central Tennessee Development Districts ombudsman program.

Myrtle Williams retired from the local H.I.S. plant after 28 years of service.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Mt. Pleasant with a score of 62 to 60. Ken Wenger led the scoring for the team with 31 points.

The LCHS Lady Panthers defeated Mt. Pleasant with a score of 53 to 50. Kim Sublett was the top scorer for the team with 20 points and 5 assists.

Tallmadge and Deborah Bradley announced the birth of their daughter, Roseanna Marie.

Funeral services were held for Arthur Hensley, 85; and for Dovie Runions, 59.

“Risky Business,” starring Tom Cruise, was the weekend movie at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.

December 16, 1993

The Hohenwald City Council approved the purchase of five acres of land by Southwest Apparel in the Industrial Park off Swan Avenue.

Strong winds caused a traffic light at the intersection of Park Avenue South and Fourth Avenue West to fall to the ground. The winds also caused damage to B & O Discount, located on the corner of Park Avenue and Main Street.

A fire destroyed Henley’s Shoprite on Buffalo Road. The fire was caused by a short in the electrical wiring over the meat department.

Letha Adcock retired from Boston Industrial Products after 26 years of service.

Robert Eckert retired from Boston Industrial Products after 16 years of service.

LCHS student Lincoln Dabbs was named the school’s Sylva Scholar was winner of the Century III Leaders competition.

Kebrina Davis was crowned queen in her age division at the Christmas in Dixie Pageant in Waynesboro.

Kenneth Kelsey and Christie Peery announced the birth of their daughter Kristyn Rhea.

Freddie Roth was honored for his 65th birthday with a dinner held at the home of his daughter, Sharon, in Nashville.

Wallace and Mary Poore were honored for their birthdays with a party hosted by the Older Adult Fellowship of the Hohenwald United Methodist Church.

Louise Crain was honored for her 80th birthday with party given at the home of her sister in Old Hickory.

Ethel Holt was honored for her 101st birthday with a dinner held at the Pineview Church of Christ annex building.

Mr. and Mrs. Herman Gandy celebrated their 65th anniversary with dinner held at the fellowship hall of Trinity Assembly of God.

Funeral services were held for Ina Hurt, 65; Dora Reynolds, 80; and for Velma Peters, 79.

In area news: Linden native Dr. Howard Trull was named Alumnus of the Year by the Freed-Hardeman University Alumni Association.

December 18, 2003

Swan Conservation Trust acquired a 1,168-acre tract of land along the Big Swan Creek in Lewis County.

Hohenwald Fire Chief Steve Vineyard was featured in the “A Closer Look…” column.

An editorial ran on the unfinished four lane on Highway 412.

Fall Hollow Village was featured in the Chamber Spotlight column.

Lewis County Stream Savers, a group of homeschooled 4-H students, was awarded $300 by MTSU WaterWorks! for the work they did in area streams.

David Henley was recognized for five years of continuous service with the Hohenwald Police Department.

A Grand Opening was held for Just Figures fitness center, located at 53 South Maple.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Summertown with a score of 66 to 57. Luke Curfman led the team in scoring with 24 points, four rebounds, and one blocked shot. The Panthers also defeated Fairview with a score of 61 to 54. Luke Curfman was the top scorer for the team with 13 points and four rebounds.

The LCHS Lady Panthers defeated Summertown with a score of 66 to 57. Britni Tenison and Casey Anderson tied for top scorer with 21 points each. The Lady Panthers defeated Fairview with a score of 63 to 50. Britni Tenison led the team in scoring with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 blocked shots.

Alicia Henze was named LCMS Student of the Week.

The following births were announced: Parker Jackson, son of Jonathan and Linda Warnken; Siarra Mackenzie, daughter of Richard Mayberry II and Nichol Sova; and BayLeigh Ra’Ann, daughter of Jason and Leza Sparks.
