December 31, 1954

The Lewis County Herald was not published this week.

January 2, 1964

Lewis County was crippled by its second large snow of the season, when 10 to 15 inches fell throughout the county.

A single-engine Cessna 150 plane crashed North of Hohenwald during a snowstorm on December 22, 1963. The pilot was treated for minor lacerations and exposure.

Hershel Spears’s home received first place in the annual home lighting contest held by the Lewis County Civic Club.

Cecil Baker, Coy Barber, and Bobby Williams completed basic training at the Naval Training Center in San Diego, CA.

Entrants were being sought for the second annual Hohenwald chess tournament.

Mr. and Mrs. Don Pace announced the birth of their son, Jeffery Black.

Funeral services were held for Leonard Brownlow, 93; Addie Goodman; Laura O’Guin, 78; Mrs. Willie Jewel, 67; Charles Whitehead, 3; and for Patricia Whitehead, 22 months.

“Wild River,” starring Montgomery Cliff and Lee Remic, and “Tarzan the Magnificent,” starring Gordon Scott were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

January 3, 1974

Richard Griffin completed an Air Force weapons mechanic course at Lowry Air Force Base in Colorado.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Santa Fe with a score of 79 to 54. Dwight Cotham led the team in scoring with 25 points.

The LCHS Pantherettes defeated Santa Fe with a score of 52 to 50. Susie Davis was the top scorer for the team with 20 points.

Mr. and Mrs. C.P. Hull celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with a reception for family and neighbors.

Mr. and Mrs. Roger Bouldin and Mr. and Mrs. Luther Anderson returned home following a week-long Caribbean cruise.

The following births were announced: Bobby Jammie, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Poore; and Glenda Rae, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Freddy Kelsey.

Funeral services were held for Olan Dabbs, 79; William DeVault, Sr., 83; Eva Harris; William Himes, 85; Charlie B. Staggs, 90; and for Leslie Whittenberg, 67.

Cabbage was $0.10 a pound at Baxter’s Bestway. Turnips were $0.25 a pound at Piggly Wiggly.

The Friday and Saturday double feature at the Highlands Drive-In were “The Big Bust Out,” starring Tony Kendall and Monica Teuber, and “The War Between Men and Women,” starring Jack Lemmon and Barbara Harris.

January 5, 1984

The unemployment rate in Lewis County dropped to 18.3 percent from the previous month’s rate of 23.1 percent.

Lewis County Sheriff C. R. Conner offered tips for home fire prevention.

The Lewis County Jaycees reported that 61 children and 37 families benefited from the group’s financial support during the Christmas season.

The following births were announced: Ciji Nichole, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Bastin; Ashley Marie, daughter of Ricky and Jo Staggs; and Jacob Matthew and Joshua Samuel, twin sons of Jackie and Leona White.

Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Barber celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception held in the fellowship hall of First United Pentecostal Church.

Nettie Nutt was honored for her 95th birthday with a dinner held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Rasbury.

Funeral services were held for Willard Peters, 62; and for Malcolm Sisco.

“Girls Night Out” and “Zombie” were the movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.

January 6, 1994

The Hohenwald Mayor and City Council announced that the city’s landfill had been approved for vertical extension, which would extend the life of the facility 15 to 18 months. Also, the City Council approved the purchase of a new fire truck.

Freddie Hudson, Jr. was selected to attend the Army’s Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Jack Turner retired from the Tennessee National Guard, he had previously served eight years and ten months in the U.S. Air Force.

The following births were announced: Haley Layne, daughter of Jeff and Stephanie Hall; and Brock Wade, son of Brian and Michelle Talley.

Funeral services were held for Delphia Armstrong, 33; Bill Blackburn, 58; Nettie Henson, 93; Mable Lancaster, 86; Jean Loveless, 65; John McCall, 68; Rita Marlin, 64; Louise Melton, 61; Betty Parnell, 65; Charles Sealy, 62; and for Annie Sherrill, 90.

January 1, 2004

Information from the TDOT office in Nashville indicated that an estimated $38 million would be necessary for the completion of the 412 Highway project in Lewis County from the Natchez Trace to the Maury County line.

Chester Darden, Hohenwald City Recorder and his staff were featured in the “A Closer Look…” column.

After a five-county investigation, two stolen 4-wheelers were recovered by the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department in Hickman County.

The LCHS Panthers defeated Hampshire with a score of 61 to 38. Jeff Sparkman led the team in scoring with 16 oints, 6 rebounds, and 1 blocked shot. The Panthers participated in the Huntingdon Point Guard Christmas Classic during the holiday break where they defeated Crockett County with a score of 53 to 38. Luke Curfman was the top scorer for the team with 16 points and 6 rebounds. The Panthers also defeated Obion County with a score of 61 to 49. Michael Creasy led the team in scoring with 22 points and 6 rebounds.

The Lady Panthers defeated Hampshire with a score of 63 to 35. Delicia Brugmann was the top scorer for the team with 18 points and 8 rebounds.

Funeral services were held for Lula Ashmore, 86; Pauline Bates, 82; Suzan Gordon, 52; and for Claude Miller, 59.
