December 24, 1953

The Herald reported, “If you come to town some night and think it is still day light, you won’t miss it far. Construction is almost complete on the new street lighting system for Hohenwald…” The new mercury vapor system was called a “white way. “The annual Big Brothers paper sale raised a total of $864.20, topping the 1952 record by $191.20.

John Edwards, Jr. was due to arrive home by Christmas after having spent the past two years in Europe with the U.S. Armed Forces.

The Lankford News column reported that several people were having to push their cars due to the sudden drop in temperature.

Nora Downey retired from McDonald Funeral Home. Her position was replaced by Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Skelton.

Funeral services were held for Charles Hensley, 71; and for John Kirk, 81.

“Roar of the Crowd,” starring Howard Duff, and “Kid from Broken Gun,” starring Charles Starrett, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Strand Theatre.

December 29, 1983

Warmer temperatures and rain relieved Lewis County after record low temperatures followed an ice storm that gripped the county. The record low was reported below 10 to 12 degrees below 0 on two days, and the wind chill plummeted to 30-40 below zero.

City of Hohenwald Criminal Investigator Pat Dabbs resigned his position.

Jean Kurty was the winner of a child-sized truck given away Christmas Eve by Morrow’s Food Town.


Navy Electronics Technician 2nd Class Douglas Spears returned from a seven-month deployment to the Mediterranean.

Funeral services were held for Cody Anderson, 18.

“Girls Night Out” and “Zombie” were the movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.

December 30, 1993

The Lewis County Historical Society was preparing to place a time capsule in the band shell at Wilhelm Tellplatz on South Maple Street to climax the year-long Sesquicentennial celebration of the formation of Lewis County.

Bill Dyer was chosen as the 1993 Top Salesman for the Singer Company, North American Industrial Sewing Products Retail Division.

Eddie Herring was the winner of a pearl and diamond ring in a drawing held December 23 at B&O Discount Jewelry Department.

A local man was injured by stabbing during an altercation on a driveway.

The following births were announced: Abby Lynn, daughter of Joe and Kim Smotherman; Lindsey Noel, daughter of Wesley and Katrina Scott.

A birthday party honoring Gertrude Roth, Martha Watson, and Freddie Roth was held at the home of Mrs. J.W. Churchwell.

Toni Maze celebrated her 21st birthday dinner on Christmas Day at the home of her parents.

Judy Tanner celebrated her birthday at the home of her mother.

Kim and Joe Smotherman, Jr. announced the birth of their daughter, Abby Lynn.

Wesley and Katrina Scott announced the birth of their daughter, Lindsey Noel.

Funeral services were held for Shirley Barnes, 53; Rubye Kea, 72; James Morton, 67; and for Della Nicholson, 89.
