“County Allocates $64,586 in Opioid Funds to Faith Based Recovery Coalition” Lewis County Government has taken a significant step in addressing the pressing issue of drug abuse in our community by allocating $64,586 from its state opioid abatement funds to the Lewis County Faith Based Recovery Coalition. The “Coalition” is an organization of local church leaders from various denominations that united together over four years ago to help combat drug abuse and assist those in need of recovery services in our community. They have been at the forefront of offering resources to individuals battling addiction in Lewis County since that time. “This allocation demonstrates the commitment that Commissioners and I have to tackling the drug epidemic in our community,” stated Lewis County Mayor Jonah Keltner. “We are fortunate to have the Coalition here in Lewis County, and I appreciate how hard they work to combat drug abuse, and how much they support recovery efforts for addicts.” The $64,586 allocation will enable the Coalition to expand its efforts in various critical areas. These include increasing access to treatment programs, enhancing outreach initiatives to educate the community on the dangers of drug abuse, and supporting safe housing options for recovering addicts. According to Pastor Jeff Gandy of Blondy Church of God, the Coalition is very appreciative of the County’s support. “This contribution will significantly enhance our ability to provide critical services and support to individuals battling addiction. With this donation, we can expand our reach and make a lasting impact on the lives of those in need,” stated Gandy. Lewis County’s state opioid funds are extremely restricted and can only be spent on opioid abatement and remediation purposes. These funds are the result of Tennessee joining several other states in reaching a $26 billion settlement with four pharmaceutical companies to resolve legal claims for their role in the national opioid crises. In order to be eligible to receive such opioid funds, the Coalition had to complete an extensive application and interview process, as well as illustrate to State and County officials how their program is beneficial to those affected by drug abuse. The Coalition must also show it’s using the funds appropriately, as frequent reporting is required going forward.
