One Day at a Time

Well last week we had some bad cold weather here in our little valley, lots of mornings it was in the single digits with snow and ice everywhere, but this week they called for warmer weather and for rain almost every day.

After the freezing rain I looked down by the creek and all the trees looked like they were made of glass, they were covered in ice, it was so pretty. Ice had covered all the snow and everything, it was so cold.

I know some of you are saying, well E.T. got her snow that she wanted. It sure was pretty but after several days of it and not being able to get out of the house, I was ready for it to melt and go away.

The old wood heating stove was working twenty four seven, the fire never went out. Every day Bobby filled up the stove and he carried the ashes out and he also brought wood in to fill up the wood box.

On those cold, cold mornings the cats were not in a hurry to get out of their warm beds, but when they did get up they were ready for their bowl of warm milk and they were really hungry. One of the cats is white and black, I think she likes the snow because she blends in with it.

All the birds have really been enjoying the bird feeders. Bobby has been trying to keep plenty of feed in the feeders. There has been lots of different kinds of birds at the feeders, with all the snow and ice that we had I bet those little birds were grateful to get something to eat.

We got around six inches of snow here before the freezing rain came and made everything slick and dangerous. We had some of the coldest temperatures that I can ever remember, but even with it below freezing the warm sun came out and started melting the snow and ice.

I am glad to see warmer weather even if we have to have lots of rain with it. Lots of people had their water pipes freeze up during the bad freezing temperatures and then when the frozen pipes thawed out their water started leaking, thankful none of ours froze. Bobby takes care of all our plumbing and electrical.

We sure have had a bad Winter so far and we have two more months of Winter too go. We got prepared for Winter long before it got here and it sure has helped, we had our firewood stacked on the back porch and we got plenty of things to eat and we even caught up a little extra water just in case the power were to go out.

I like to see a little snow but not a lot all at one time, and I like to see it snow one day and then melt away on the next day. This old body sure does not like the cold anymore either, but I am thankful for a good warm house and food on our table.

We have been having a lot of our good homemade soup, they seem to taste even better when it is cold outside and the soup sure does smell good simmering on top of the old wood heating stove. I also made us an apple cobbler and we enjoyed it with a little scoop of ice cream despite all the snow and ice outside.

I have been able to get a little work done on the inside and I have got some more sewing done, but I am looking forward to springtime too. I try to enjoy everyday.

I know there is a lot of sickness going around and Bob and me have had a head cold but I guess that comes with the cold weather. Some people have been getting bad sick. We always try to put on Vicks salve and drink lots of homemade blueberry juice and grape juice and stay inside were it is warm and rest. There is an old saying that fluids and rest equal healing, but that is just an old saying.

Bob has finished washing the breakfast dishes and the kitchen is spotless and he is having his coffee. The cats have gone back to bed. I am going to sew some on a quilt after dinner, we are going to have leftovers for dinner but homemade food taste good even when warmed back up.

I am not going to worry about tomorrow and I am going to take one day at a time because God still has it all under control and He is the light at the end of the tunnel.

God bless,

Evelyn “E.T.” Trevathan
