February 25, 1954

W.T. Starbuck was officially installed as Acting Postmaster for the Hohenwald Post Office. The position became vacant following the death of Jack Collier.

The American Legion sponsored a "Back to God" program at the LCHS auditorium. The speaker for the occasion was Beacom Jones of Nashville.

Mr. and Mrs. Harville Griner announced the birth of their son, Stephen Douglas.

Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Gallaher reported that they caught a fox trying to come into their house.

Funeral services were held for Fred Clay, 48; and for Mrs. R.D. Willis.

Ladies blouses were on sale at H.L. Rasbury & Son for the price of $0.98, ladies dresses for $4.98, and baby dresses for $1.98.

"Blue Print for Murder," starring Joseph Cotton and Jean Peters, and "Roll on Texas Moon," starring Roy Rogers, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Strand Theatre.


February 27, 1964

Due to numerous complaints about dogs running at large, the City of Hohenwald reminded residents that City Ordinance 141 prohibited dogs from running loose, and asked that they cooperate to help reduce the number of dogs on city streets.

Paul Bridges, Delores Duncan, and Claudia Ricketts were named LCHS Good Citizens.

Former resident Harold Gray sold his invention for a new cotton gleaner to the Garland Steele Company of Phoenix, AZ. The gleaner was designed as a two-row machine that used nylon brushes to get the cotton out of the drill and to clean the cotton before it hit the basket.

The LCHS Panthers basketball team won their first game in the 21st District Tournament held in Centerville when they defeated Clifton 65 to 50. Bobby Harwood led the team in scoring with 15 points, followed closely by Lynn Brown with 13 and Larry Cook with 12 points.


Reverend Byron Webb, Henry Spears, George Spears, and George Spears, Jr. were all honored with a birthday dinner hosted by Mrs. Byron Webb and Mrs. George Spears.

Patricia Henley was named 1964 Betty Crocker Homemaker of the Tomorrow at LCHS.

Funeral services were held for Barbara Moore, 7; Joseph Pitts, 89; and for Roscoe Robnett, 79.

Fresh cut chicken gizzards and hearts were on sale at Piggly Wiggly for $0.39 a pound, chicken back and necks cost $0.19 a pound, and chicken wings were $0.29 a pound. Piggly Wiggly also advertised free kits with the purchase of six packages of Jello.


"Lover Come Back," starring Rock Hudson and Doris Day, and "The Restless Years," starring John Saxton and Sandra Dee, were the Friday and Saturday movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

February 28, 1974

More than 100 members of the Farm community gathered outside the Lewis County Court House while the four members convicted of growing marijuana were placed in vehicles for transportation to the state penitentiary. Residents of the Farm stated that they would continue legal efforts to free the four.

Both the LCHS boys and girls Panthers basketball teams won the first two games in the Region 10 Tournament. The Pantherettes defeated Lynnville with a score of 52 to 37 and defeated Linden with a score of 50 to 55. The Panthers defeated Summertown with a score of 61-39 and defeated Clifton with a score of 47 to 43. In the Linden game, the Pantherettes gained the victory after playing four overtimes. Sussie Davis scored a total of 27 points, including four free throws to gain the victory.

The following births were announced: Kevin Lee, son of Mr. and Mrs. Danny Staggs; Lee Murray, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Burklow; and Luann, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Thomas.

Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Turnbow were honored on their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house reception hosted by their sons.

Funeral services were held for Edward Berry; Bryan Rodgers, 76; and for James Sharp.

"The Love Slaves" and "The Magnificent Seven Ride," starring Lee Van Cleef, were the weekend movies showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theater.

March 1, 1984

Approximately 1,000 persons attended the open house held at Hohenwald Elementary School East. A Community Development Grant enabled renovations at the school including the installation of an emergency exit for the second story.

The LCHS Lady Panthers defeated B.G.A. in the first round of the District 9AA tournament with a score of 63 to 25. Kathy Dye led the team with 19 points and 13 rebounds.

The following births were announced: Marti Elizabeth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Lomax; Emily Beth and Christa Layne, twin daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Tim Webb; and Laurie Angeline, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Greg Hamilton.

Arnold Anderson was honored for his 85th birthday with a party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Skelton.

Funeral services were held for Lawrence Brown, 67; J.C. Devore, 61; and for Burton Pollock, 83.

"Uncommon Valor," starring Gene Hackman, Patrick Swayze, and Robert Stack, was the weekend movie showing at the Highlands Drive-In Theatre.

March 3, 1994

Damage estimates for the ice storm that hit Lewis County on February 10 exceeded $800,000.

The LCMS Raiders claimed the T-N-T State Championship by defeating Rockwood with a score of 60 to 57. Price Robinson led the scoring with 25 points, hitting 12 of 16 shots and grabbing 10 rebounds. Ito Rodriguez scored 16 points, hitting 7 of 10 shots and grabbing 7 rebounds.

Howard Skelton earned his first degree black belt in Karate.

Keith Frazier was featured in the Teacher Feature column.

Earlene Ethridge was honored for her 85th birthday with a celebration held at Lewis County Manor.

Funeral services were held for Robert Patterson, 46; and for Mildred Spurgeon, 72.

February 26, 2004

City Mayor Bob Burklow signed a proclamation declaring February 13 as Read Across America Day.

State Representative Joey Hensley was named "Legislator of the Year" by the Tennessee Association of Development Districts.

A shareholders meeting of the Hohenwald Recreation and Golf Club resulted in a 974 votes to 61 in favor of allowing the City of Hohenwald to take over the golf course. In a special session of the Hohenwald City Council, a resolution was passed to acquire the golf club.

A Citizen's Police Academy would be held by the Hohenwald Police Department. Classes would begin March 25.

Lewis County Public Library was featured in the "A Closer Look..." column.

African elephants Tange and Zula arrived in Hohenwald. They joined 8 resident Asian elephants at the Elephant Sanctuary.

The LCHS Lady Panthers defeated Marshall County with a score of 29 to 24 in District 9AA Tournament play. Delicia Brugmann was the lead scorer for the team with 11 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 blocked shot.

Michael Simmons was promoted to lieutenant with the Hohenwald Police Department.

Maggie Keathely was the LCMS Student of the Week.

Andrew Craig was promoted in the Army to the rank of specialist after returning from Iraq.

Donald Duncan was promoted by MLEC to the position of district operating supervisor.

Sentinel Trust Company was featured in the Chamber Spotlight Column.

The following births were announced: Sydni Abigail, daughter of Terry and Amanda Barnes; Cherish Annamarie, daughter of Brandon and Vicky Farnham; Elizabeth Marcella, daughter of Jeremy and Melissa Burlison; and Breauna Kim, daughter of Rodney Staggs and Mandie WalmAugusta Williams was honored for her 95th birthday with a celebration held at the Life Care Center in Columbia.

Hazel Hinson was honored for her 95th birthday with a celebration held at the Lewis County Manor.

Wilson and Dorothy Sharpe celebrated their 60th anniversary with a celebration held at the First United Methodist Church family life center.

Funeral services were held for Luke Baker, infant; Dolores Gilkey, 74; Lois McClain, 82; Ray Ohman, 83; and for Willadean Reeves.
